We recently connected with Hanah Salas and have shared our conversation below.
Hanah , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
We are centered in mutual aid. A portion of our sales is put back into the community by offering money and or healing products to folks who need it and cannot afford them. We prioritize Black, Brown, Indigenous, Trans, queer, disabled and other underrepresented people.
Hanah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a first generation Mexican mama here in San Diego/ Kumeyaay land. My love for herbs, folk medicine and helping others started young and developed after I had my first child. Later when my mom was diagnosed with Lyme disease and fibromyalgia I delved deeper into plant medicine and grew my business more. Today, I have two lines Magic Mama Co which is a family friendly line of wellness and care products, and OpenApothecary, the CBD line which focuses on aiding physical and emotional pain. Our products are all natural and plant based. Ranging from self-love sprays to CBD pain rub. Our goal is to make folks feel better and make life a little easier. Both lines focus on physical and emotional wellness and helping alleviate stress, anxiety, sleep issues and physical pain.
Our amazing products, sliding scale pricing and commitment to mutual aid are what makes us stand out as a business. We offer sliding scale pricing on our website and in person. Sliding scale is a flexible range of pricing that adjusts to the income and needs of the customer. This pricing model allows for more people to be able to access and benefit from our healing and care products.
We can’t wait for you to check out our products yourself to see how they may help you!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Something I had to unlearn was the idea of cannabis being bad and dangerous. I grew up in the time of D.A.R.E. and there’s so much stigma around marijuana and cannabis. When I started infusing cannabis and making tinctures and rubs for my mom and got to see first hand the huge difference they made in her quality of life from sleeping better, alleviating physical pain and helping with anxiety and depression. I really had to decolonize my mind and unlearn what I thought I knew about this plant. I work with CBD, which primarily comes from hemp which is related to marijuana which is in the family of cannabis. I am so honored to be working with this plant to better serve my community.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I started making clean and natural products for my family and they shared them with their friends and it kept growing and people asked for more so I kept making more. Today I get to making healing products full time and I couldn’t be more grateful. I really enjoy using my hands to create and I enjoy helping people so making healing products is one of my life’s purposes that I get to fulfill.
