We were lucky to catch up with Cortni’ Davis-Jackson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cortni’, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I’d like my legacy to be the story of a woman who finally believed in herself enough to go after everything God had for her with the intention to live and walk in her purpose. The story of the woman who beat her insecurities and doubts by walking in Faith.
I’d like to leave behind the gift of music and how it connects, heals and inspires. Years from now, I want companies and individuals to still be in awe of their Jingle, special occasion event, meditation track, etc. The same way we hear commercials and songs now and can’t help but to sing along… I want that legacy for my Clients! Longevity and timelessness.
Cortni’, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Born and raised on the Westside of Los Angeles, CA, I’ve alway been a social butterfly and I’ve always had a love/passion for music. Vocal lessons as early as middle school from my father in our garage turned studio, singing in school plays and the Church choir.
In that same regard, I am also very shy – when it comes to my talents and being put on the spot. I knew I had a gift and I wanted to sing, however, the stage was always such a scary space to me. I would always shy away from solos in the Church and school choir. Put me in a group setting and I was fine, lol! That spotlight, for some reason, just made me uncomfortable. Like – ALL EYES ON ME was a LOT of pressure.
During my teen years I started writing poetry (which later flourished into a love for song writing). During both my teen and early adult years, I was a part of several girl groups. When then last girl group didn’t pan out, I decided to venture out on my own as an artist. I started networking and hitting up talent shows, singing background and hooks/ad-libs on songs for other artists (I wanted to be the female Nate Dogg real bad, lol) and writing songs for other artists. I started meeting the right people and making the right connections and I was flourishing as both a singer and songwriter and it felt amazing! I even ventured out into reality show competitions (American Idol, TLC’s R U The Girl and Diddy’s Making the Band). These were huge accomplishments, even though I did not win. I made it to the top 80 contestants in American Idol and received call backs for both R U The Girl and Making the Band. That motivated me even more.
Somewhere along the line, I realized it was never the celebrity of it all that I wanted. It was my love for music itself. I loved writing and being able to express myself and connect… I love how it heals and inspires. Hearing a track from scratch and creating something so amazing that everyone can relate to in some aspect gives me joy. Story telling, the melodies and harmonies – they are my happy place.
After years of ‘chasing the dream,’ I took a step back to actually adult, lol! I got so settled in ‘adulting’ that I let go of creating music completely – although my passion for it never ceased. When Covid hit in 2020, while working from home, I was sitting on the sofa and felt like, ‘this can’t be it.’ There has to be more and I need purpose – I felt like I was wasting away. I sat and jotted down several ideas with great potential and the one I kept circling back to – that stood out the most, of course was the one that influenced my first love and passion… MUSIC! Jingles and it felt right! So the Jingle Lingo journey began!
I already had two of the components needed – singing and songwriting. Although it had been quite a while since I had done either, I knew if I just sat down and focused and really fully immersed myself, I’d be fine. It was the other components I had to learn – and am still learning. Production was something I had never done before… building a brand was also new to me, but I was and still am up for the challenge as it just feels right.
Jingles are fun, catchy and easy to remember. Think about it… how often do you catch yourself singing along to a commercial, theme song, etc.? When you can’t remember the company name in that ad you saw the other day, but… they had a catchy Jingle or phrase that stuck. THAT is the power of Jingles. With the world being so immersed in social media these days, Jingles are great for reels, getting you noticed, radio spots, podcasts, fashion shows, etc. Most people are using trending sounds, and that’s great – it gets you noticed, but…. what is making them remember YOU… YOUR BRAND?
Although Jingles are the main focus, it’s not all we do. Special Occasions have also been a hit – proposals, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Birthdays, Holidays, etc. We also do meditation tracks. Basically, if it’s music related and you can dream it – we can achieve it. We believe in our clients… their brands, love, vision, etc. We listen and work to bring your brand to life.
I am most proud to have taken this leap of Faith and my commitment to it. I am proud of the growth we have experienced in these two years in spite of obstacles. I am proud of and excited for what the future holds for Jingle Lingo.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn doubting and questioning myself! I had that BAD – it’s not completely gone, but… I can now humbly accept my talents and realize, I’m pretty freak’n dope! God did His thing with me – Respectfully!
Being shy is a part of insecurities. and we are often our worst enemy. We see the flaws and they become ALL we see. We have to learn to embrace them and make them our strengths.
I hid behind girl groups for years. It wasn’t until I ventured out on my own that I was truly able to see my gifts… my light! Stepping away from the groups allowed and encouraged me to take leaps of Faith and flourish in ways I likely would not have had the opportunity to – if I hadn’t.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Taking the time to actually hear my Clients and building genuine relationships with them… learning about their brand, interests/story and what it is they want to accomplish. Taking my time and fully immersing myself in their world allowing me to create quality work that represents them as a brand and an individual. Creating feel good music that resonates in the hearts and souls of others. It’s not about the dollar, for us. We want to see our Clients win… happy and in love… centered and flourishing.
