We recently connected with Jerevon Elias and have shared our conversation below.
Jerevon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
At a young age my father would have me listen to classical music and music composers and instilled that in me. Just from that I’ve had a passion for that type of music. Honestly no one sat down and taught me how to play piano. I mainly just watched my father play and I picked it up and taught myself the rest. Then it progressed to playing by ear as well which was a huge milestone and essentially the turning point for me, but I think the only true obstacle I had was putting walls up. I used to limit my greatness and my potential to grow and be better in what I truly wanted to do.
Jerevon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started at a very young age teaching myself how to play piano. I mainly tried playing scores from films and video games and Ive been listening to a composer named Hans Zimmer that truly became my inspiration. Ever since I heard the soundtrack from the movie Inception that’s when the switch hit for me. My father had gotten me a new workstation keyboard so I could start recording and I’ve been making my own music and saving it on the piano. I ended up upgrading and getting a Digital Audi Workstation with tons of sounds I could make scores with. I think what makes me so different is my unorthodox playing methods. I don’t play the piano like everyone else that has learn how to. I have my own unique style that works for me. I’ve also never really thought that learning to read music was for me either. Music is good when it has structure but it sometimes sounds bland. When you let the music flow and become free, that is where true power comes from.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Honestly my goal is to inspire others and give people hope through music. I want them to feel strength within themselves to do good and to persevere. What I love about having such a goal is that there’s new people brought into the world pretty much everyday so they’re always people to inspire. So this goal doesn’t have a limit.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Knowing that I’m able to help someone conquer issues and their fears is the best feeling and having it be something that I’ve created on my own is truly a blessing.
