We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Devon & Kendra Grace & Ferguson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Devon & Kendra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
We learned by diving into the work. Neither one of us have experience with podcasting, so we’ve had to build our bridge as we climb it. To speed up our learning process, we could have had more detailed conversations with people who were already in the podcasting industry. While we’re avid podcast listeners, there’s so much we didn’t know about this industry going in. The most essential skills were: 1.) Understanding the importance of having good audio, and what tools are needed to insure audio is good on all ends. 2.) Understanding the importance of quality videos (if there’s a visual component). This served as a huge learning curve. 3.)Learning how to interview. After speaking with a podcast producer, we learned the importance of keeping interviews clear and concise. The biggest obstacle was learning how to navigate this podcasting world. There’s always something to learn and improve on! Strong audio and visuals were, and at times still serve as, a huge obstacle.
Devon & Kendra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The Real Mama Pod was created by Devon and Kendra, two college bestfriends, who’ve experienced a lot of “WTF” moments in mamahood. We believe that many of those “WTF” moments are due to the absence of real, raw, and candid conversations around mamahood. Our platform is here to address many of those “WTF” moments and foster a space for women to feel safe in sharing their experiences and journey in mamahood.
We got into this industry by simply during the research. We researched what equipment would be best, what host platform we should use, etc. Having a two-woman team allows us to “mainly” be disciplined in perfecting our craft. We serve as accountability partners and put our individual strengths where best suited. The products we use are: Rodecaster (podcast recording equipment); Apple & HP (laptops/phones); Canon (camera), etc. We share most of our creatives on Instagram, where we provide weekly content. Mama Hack Mondays, Talk to Us Tuesdays, Mama Crush Wednesdays, New Episode Thursdays, Mama Juice Fridays (cocktails & mocktails served in the episode of the week). We don’t’ necessarily solve problems, however, we use our platform for mamas (and mamas-to-be) to share their experiences around motherhood, and how their stories can support other mothers. We’re set apart from others by sharing real and raw experiences around motherhood. Nothing is off limits! We also share how motherhood impacts others areas of life such as work, intimacy with your partner, social life, and more. We’re most proud of how much we’ve grown over the past year! We’re only a year in the game, and our community has grown tremendously.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is being able to use our stories, experiences, and platform to support other mothers and create a community where they feel safe in sharing their stories and experiences. We’ve had many experiences shared on our platform that have really helped other mothers not feel alone, advocate for themselves (where needed), and more.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Our families, listeners, and the experiences of motherhood is what drives our creative journey. Every mother has a story to tell, and that’s what we’re here for… to lend space to that mama!
