We recently connected with Kristin LaFine and have shared our conversation below.
Kristin , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I left a six figure corporate job to pursue my passion. Sometimes quality over quantity is necessary. After 24 year’s climbing the corporate ladder I made the decision to take a radical sabbatical to focus on growing my clinical herbalist business. I’m a maker and therefore focus on formulating synergistic blends that heal and balance the body. There is a burning desire around us to understand more about natural healing. I hope to leverage my training to share herbal knowledge with my community. I want to provide an outlet of support to those in need. It’s too soon to say how things will work out but what I know for certain is that without risk there is no reward. We can’t limit ourselves for fear of the unknown. I took a huge risk to follow my heart. I’m confident I have the strength and commitment to see it through. My business is in its 2nd year and continues to grow. This year I plan to expand into clinical consultations and in person training/labs with hands on training.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My focus has been on educating. We can often walk into a health and wellness store and find herbal remedies. But finding people with the understanding and knowledge is limited. I handcraft herbal remedies using only organic herbs which you generally can’t find in big box stores. Im most proud of how we evolve, listening to voice of our clients.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I started my business with partner who’s share was 10% but like many have heard. Going into business with a friend doesn’t usually end well. 8 months in, my business partner decided they no longer wanted to be a part of the business and drained the company bank account. I lost every penny that was earned and was forced to to start over with $0 in the bank.
Lesson learned, make sure you partner with someone who has the same goals in mind. Build a vision board and make sure your visions are aligned. Assign responsibility and hold each other accountable. Each person must hold up their end of the bargain.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I have both a Shopify and Etsy store. The downside is the time commitment to keep the site’s current. Additionally the fees associated with running each site often forces you to increase your selling prices. I prefer the in person direct sales. I love spending time in person at markets and events. These events have helped me grow my social media presence.
