We were lucky to catch up with Lenae Ploscynski recently and have shared our conversation below.

Lenae, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

It’s kind of crazy actually, years ago in 2017 I opened “DermaLash Studio” on a Phenix Suite and I was crush by the idea of not having insurance, paid vacation and the socially acceptable idea of a “real job” and I quit and got a regular 9 to 5 I never thought I’d want to own a busy again. Fast forward to 2020 I’m working as a Customer Service coordinator at an ASL book publishing company studying ASL interpreting. And Covid hits and realize I LOVE ASL but I HATE my job and I realized I missed skin. So in 2021 I got a job as an educator at a beauty school and began working at Skin & Tonique as their Lead Esthetician, She decided as an owner she wanted to go different ways with her business and within 60 Day The Derma Lab: Beauty Lounge was born! DermaLash no longer fit because I didn’t do lashes and my name really swayed people to think I did more lashing and less skin..ing. When I realized my purpose and my passion within the beauty industry, The Derma Lab: Beauty Lounge was created for those looking for anything beauty they could come to me and relax!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

My name is Lenae Ploscynski I’m a 29 year old mixed girl from a small town in Wisconsin, I grew up with a hair dresser for a mother and she really introduced me to the joys of having a clientele and creating relationships with people and getting paid to do it! So when I moved to San Diego at 20 in 2013 I realized I had no idea what I was doing but I knew I loved makeup and I wanted to work with “Celebrities,” so I decided to go to beauty school, fell in love with skin and the rest is history! The Derma Lab focuses on treatment based services with a relaxing and friendly experience. So you come in and are able to actual correct your skin problems but with a touch of true self-care. A relaxing massage with a head starch ending! Our main focus is anti-aging, both preventative and corrective, scarring and pigmentation. I like to call us “The Pigmentation Station” because I LOVE pigmentation and the concept of overactive melanin! The Derma lab is a deaf-friendly, LGBTQIA friendly, black WOMAN Owned and I’m very proud to have those labels! My goal is to be professional, best friend that just wants to make you feel as beautiful on the outside as you are on the inside. A few of my favorite services, my Peptide Firming Anti-aging treatment, chemical peels, lash lift and tints, brows and full-glam wedding makeup! But I love customize treatments to fit my clients needs, and teaching what should be done at home so we have the best success!

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

My best source of clientele has been Google and Apple Maps. I keep my page updated regularly! And I’ve never paid for ads, I know others with great success also paying for ads but I’ve had the best success just keeping my Google constantly updated and photos, good reviews! Have your clients review often!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

I believe I’m currently in my resilience phase! I moved my business from Escondido to Bay Park, San Diego. I’ve always been in North County, San Diego and moving a business that far from your clients is dangerous, I’ve had some had some wonderful clients who have followed me, and I have had a ton of clients who couldn’t make the drive. I have been blessed with other co-business in my space that I have grown fond of and we have traded clients and it’s been such a blessing! So I think with the current rebuilding of my business I’m in my resilience phase but I’m so grateful to be in my space!
