Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Voncille Chaney. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Voncille, thanks for joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I came up with the idea to become a Career Coach in early 2016 because I wanted to officially share with the world the skills I had crafted over the years (as a Recruiter, and Director of Budget, Operations, and Human Resources for the Department of Education). I have always had a passion for helping others. Word of mouth has always been my greatest marketing tool. I started helping family and friends enhance their resumes, then I would help their friends, and their friend’s friends. At that point I decided to expand my services and create a business, rather than being known as the “Resume Lady”.
When it came to writing books, I was literally driving alone in my car one December evening in 2016, and it just came to me. “I will write books to empower young girls”. I immediately told my family and friends, and they held me accountable. They would ask about my progress and that would motivate me. I also tapped into a few of my Author friends. I was nervous, but I knew it was something that had to be done. I saw the task as something greater than myself, so I did the work to make it happen. The first book was a tough process, I wanted to give up towards the end, as the Self-Publishing process is very tiring due to its hands-on nature. I can remember just sitting still and asking God to guide me, and then I began to see the finish line. The second book was much easier. I am working on the third book now.
Voncille, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I Am Queen JVC LLC is a company that combines my mission to help both adults (Just V Consulting) and children (I Am Queen Books) alike.
Just V Consulting is a Career Coaching Service that provides individuals with Life Mastery skills. What makes JVC different from the rest is that we are focused on all areas surrounding an individual’s success. Specific services include Organizational Skills Development; Budget Planning; Education Guidance; College Admissions Essay Help; Career Guidance; Interview Coaching; Resume Revision; Resume Writing (From Scratch); Curriculum Vitae (CV) Resumes; Cover Letters; and Thank You Letters.
I Am Queen books focuses on youth empowerment. The anti-bullying regime instills the concept of self-love for girls and boys from all communities. “I Am Queen Ruby” is my very first book. It is about a young girl, named Ruby, who is teased for having darker skin. When Ruby gets empowered by her teacher, she realizes that she is a queen. My second book is called “Queen Iris Gets Her Crown”, it is about a girl who is teased about her natural hair texture. She gets inspired by her grandmother and realizes that she is a Queen.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
This is somewhat of a secret. When I was a little girl, I would wonder about the world. I would ask a lot of questions. One thing I could never seem to find the answer to is why there was so much hate and anger in the world. I was significantly fond of people like Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, and Mahatma Gandhi. When I was 10, I wrote a letter to President Clinton regarding sending food to aid the crisis in Somalia. He wrote me back and I still have the letter!
When I had my son in 2002, I was even more motivated to try to make the world a better place because I had a child who had to grow up in it. I began to study others. What I gathered was that “life happens”; and we are all bound by the cards we were dealt in some way, but everyone has the choice to choose how they are going to show up in the world. The next thing I learned was that we are all connected. We all need air to breathe and hearts to love. In 2011, I decided to get my master’s degree in Urban Affairs. I was very much interested in what factors went into shaping people in an Urban City. I am so glad I did. We never studied anything remotely close to the human condition when I received my 2 Accounting Degrees (Associate’s in 2002 and Bachelor’s in 2009). In addition, I have spent my 9-5 hours working in a field that combines all my degrees and is connected to my passion for helping others.
When it comes to connecting with both adults and children, I’ve learned that leading with love is all it takes. All people want is to feel like they matter, they’re valued, or they are appreciated in some way. I always try to let my clients/customers know that I see them. Sometimes I can see the things that they cannot even see for themselves. I often get goosebumps when young people get excited to meet me, “The Author”. I love to see their eyes light up, when I tell them that they can be an author or whatever they want to be one day. Speaking life into their dreams and ideas goes a long way.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I know we live in the days of social media. However, the secret sauce to my success has always been “word of mouth”. A very large majority of my consulting clients are family, friends, or associates of former clients. People have even gone to networking events and reached out to me afterwards saying I gave someone your business information. I cannot knock social media because people will definitely tag me or my company when they find that someone is in need of a Resume Enhancement, Children’s Book, or Public Speaker.
