We recently connected with Mami Bands and have shared our conversation below.
Mami , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Before becoming a Musical Artist I started out as a Hairstylist. I’d been doing hair since I was 12 years old and since then knew I didn’t want to work for anyone else and had developed an entrepreneurial mindset early on. I’ve always been into the creative aspect of life , loving to draw, paint, color, whatever and hair was definitely a way to showcase my creative talents and just being able to do and create different things with my hands.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an Artist from New Orleans, Louisiana. I create rap Music as well as run a Beauty Business providing Hair and Makeup services. I got into music about 2 years ago after writing my first song and my friends and family liked it so I decided I would keep going to see what all I can actually do. I was already familiar with music after growing up around it because my older brother had been rapping since he was around 10 years old. So I had a basic understanding of how things went and just started writing my songs. As far as the Beauty Business, I’d been doing that since 12 years old after being taught some styles from my mother and my grandmother was a cosmetologist. I do things like natural hairstyles, braids, wigs, sew ins, ponytails & much more. So everything I do now was already things I’ve grown up around. Hair is my main occupation, I’m self employed so a lot of my music is stemmed from that, being able say I’m a Boss and actually mean it. Aside from all that , I’m a mother as well and have a 3 year old son, so being Disciplined in being consistent with all my ventures can sometimes be a challenge but I won’t let it stop me. I try to set myself apart from other artists by creating more meaningful music and still having that fun sexy side to it.
I can say I’m really proud of myself for putting myself out there and being able to do the things that I enjoy in life. Being grateful that I’m blessed to be as talented as I am and can make a living from it is the icing on the cake ! I’m also grateful and thankful for anyone that supports me whether it’s music or hair !
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, just being able to say “I made this”. Like being able to create something that I really like and enjoyed making and then having other people like it as well (even though not everyone will like it) is satisfying to me. And being able to have more people become fans and want to follow you along your journey is definitely rewarding.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think so just sharing and streaming , like if you like the work share it, add it to your story or your selfie or video or reel… Just like you do the sounds that’s trending. As an Artist I find it really helpful when other people share my music , it leads other people to me and my music. Not only that , on the Beauty as well. Having someone share a style I did can lead someone else to me that may want that same style. So sharing for sure.
