Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Talyn Edelson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Talyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I had just gone through a break-up and was crying in my room feeling very alone. My neighbor Violet, whom I had never met, came over to my house and left a care package on my doorstep with a very sweet note saying she hoped I felt better. She gave me a book in addition to some adorable feel-good odds and ends. This really moved me and reminded me to go out of my way to be kind and that the power to make someone’s day better is so meaningful. Be the light. Love thy neighbor.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started martial arts and acting in theatre + musical theatre around age seven. Additionally, I participated in many sports such as being center-mid on a coed soccer team, wakeboarding, snowboarding, parkour, dance, cheerleading, etc. I’ve always loved athletics and creativity. On my high school class ring (from 9th grade) I had chosen a martial artist and drama masks for the side symbols as my favorite activities that I loved. Once I found out what stunts and action acting were, my heart was set on doing whatever it took to succeed as a performer and movement/action specialist in Hollywood.
When I was a little girl, I remember listening to ‘Stole’ by Kelly Rowland and promising myself I’d move out to Los Angeles to pursue this path and put my hand in Marilyn Monroe’s handprint as a sort of pact to follow through with the pursuit of my childhood goals. I have a photo of this very moment when I was fifteen years old. My hand was the same size, and I’m gleaming while looking up at the camera. I vowed to move to Los Angeles and pursue work in film/tv.
Needless to say, I moved back to Los Angeles one week before my 21st birthday to start my performing career. It truly has been a struggle of blood, sweat and tears as you always hear.
I now successfully work as a stunt performer and actress and am so grateful to be doing what I love. Along my way I held up to six jobs at once and even had to be sleeping on a mattress in the living room on the floor in a houseful of five men because I was unable to cover rent after paying a vet bill for my dog. Luckily, they let me sleep there and didn’t allow me to be sleeping in my car while I did my best to pay the bills so I could continue to pursue my performing dreams. Those men were very kind.
Years later, I solely do creative work and I am so grateful to be living the dream. Although I am always gunning to increase the frequency of time that I am on set, I am so happy to say I am a solely an athlete and performer.
I am most proud of my willingness to never give up and continue to pursue my childhood dreams. I am proud that I know myself and that I still love the two things on my class ring that led me to my occupation as a celebrity stunt double and action actress– martial arts and acting. I love what I have always loved, and my loyalty to myself and others is something of which I am also very proud.
What sets me apart is that I am versatile, creative, multi-faceted, professional, easygoing, steadfast and am always training and working to increase my skills that pertain to my career. Despite all obstacles, I continue to push forward and create opportunities for myself and others in my industry while pursuing my goals. I am a white belt for life, and I believe in that mindset.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to simply be performing on set and making a living as a successful performer as I produce films in my time not working for others that each give back to a worthy cause about which I am passionate.
I want to be a great partner to the man that I love and become a greater than great wife and mother.
I just want to creatively collaborate with my friends and those I love in the film/tv world so I can show others that even regular little girls who grew up on farms with nothing are able to achieve their dreams and do what they love.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
People assume that I’ve had it easy because I’m an average-looking white blonde, but I’ve been through so many obstacles and hardships that most people don’t dream of. Thank god we have creativity for catharsis. You really can’t judge a book by its cover. I really suggest you take that to heart.
