We were lucky to catch up with Erin King recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of my coaching business is Journee In Her Shoes. In 2017 I lost a baby and almost lost my life, within six months of that I found out that a close family member had been sexually assaulted so I decided to name my business in honor of the baby that I lost and also dedicate it to the family member who was assaulted. Journee is the name I was going to name my baby had it been a girl and In Her Shoes is dedicated to my family member who was assaulted. I felt so helpless at the time that I was looking for way to honor both of them and that is how I came up with the name of my business Journee In Her Shoes. I knew life after that was going to be a journey and that was the best way that I could turn something so tragic into something beautiful. I believe that when something tragic happens there is an expectancy for people to just move forward as if nothing happened or just get over it. People who have not experienced what you have may not understand where you are, what is needed to move forward or even the words to begin to comfort you. That is why telling your story is so important. It helps people to understand they are not alone in this and if you are able to move forward then they can too. That is what Journee In Her Shoes represents.

Erin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Erin King also known as Coach K. I am the founder of Journee In Her Shoes. I’m a Certified Life Coach that specializes in self-worth and confidence. I help women who feel lost after toxic relationships own their story, regain their self-worth, build their confidence and ultimately become the woman she has always envisioned for herself. I believe it is important for women to know that you are not defined by your past and you do not have to be consumed by it.
In 2017, I experienced two traumas within six months of each other. I lost my baby and found out that a close family member had been sexually assaulted which led me to suffering in silence for two years. Those were by far the hardest two years of my life. In 2019, God sent someone to tell me that if I did not heal, then my family wouldn’t heal. At that moment I knew that I had no choice but to heal. That is when I started to open up and tell my story. I noticed the more I told my story the more I started to heal. Through my healing journey, I discovered my purpose. I chose to become a life coach because I did not want another woman to feel the pain that I felt. I invested in myself, hired a coach, and built the foundation of my business in 2020. I launched Journee In Her Shoes in February of 2021.
Journee creates a safe space amongst women that feels comfortable and judgement free for women to share and own their story. Journee is authentic, it’s based on real life experiences, it’s intimate, it’s welcoming, it’s a sisterhood and a community. My programs help women own, acknowledge, and accept all parts of their stories good, bad, and the ugly. This helps my clients to release themselves from the emotional baggage that is keeping them stuck. By owning, acknowledging, and accepting their part, my clients are then able to give themselves the apology that they deserve. Within that they are able to regain their power, their voice, their confidence and self-worth and so much more.
I am truly passionate about what I do each one of my programs were custom built and based off of my own struggles within life and let me be the first to tell you I had a lot of them, from being a single mom, to being in toxic relationships, and if you have walked away from a toxic relationship then you know that your confidence is shattered and your self-worth is almost nonexistent. By creating my programs and services based off of my own struggles I am able to relate to each one of my clients providing them with a genuine connection, support, hope, encouragement and the tools they need to move forward. I currently have four coaching programs. More Than Enough is designed for women who struggle with their confidence and self-worth. I Choose Me is designed for women who struggle to care for themselves. No Longer Her is designed for women who no longer want to accept less from herself or anyone else. Own your story is designed for women who are lost, stuck, broken, or confused due to emotional baggage. My new signature program Becoming Her will be launching towards the end of 2023. My goal is to help women create better relationships with themselves. My clients are able to choose whether they want to work with me one on one or within a small intimate group of like-minded women.
That is what I believe sets Journee apart from other coaching businesses is the experience itself, the love and support given, because I have been there, and I know just how hard it can be to move forward. Which is why I created Journee to be a safe space for women that feels comfortable and judgement free regardless of where life has taken them. Women suffer in silence every day in fear of being judged, talked about or misunderstood. Journee is just the opposite of that. My clients feel comfortable to share their stories and receive the love and support from other women letting them know that they are not alone, they are not their past and they do not have to be consumed by it.
I am most proud of my ability to not give up no matter what life has thrown my way and because of that I was able to birth Journee In Her Shoes. Journee started from a dream, that I was able to bring to life and when I first started my healing journey, I thought I just needed to heal so that my family could heal but now I see that it was so much more than that, because I chose to listen to what God told me I was able to create something that is so much bigger than me. My original thought was Journee would help two people who were struggling and needed a resource, a place to just let it out, and because I stayed true to myself, my vision, my journey and what God said to me. I now get to see that vision come to life. I now get to see how important my journey was and now I understand why things happened the way they did and why my journey needed to be the way that it was. Since then, I have been able to share my story with the world. I have been featured on the radio, interviews, and podcasts; I have had the opportunity to spotlight everyday women on Instagram Live, that I see showing up in the world not only for herself but for other women as well.
I believe sometimes we get so caught up in temporary situations that we become consumed by it. I want women to know that your story is not over yet. It’s up to you to turn the page. Yes, it’s true everyone has a story but it’s important to own yours. You can either own your story or continue to let your story own you. Taking ownership of your story is truly life changing because once you own your story, you know that each phase of your journey is just a chapter in your book called life. If you are ready to turn the page and start owning your story, rebuilding your self-worth and confidence then I am the coach for you. There are many ways you can work with me, you can also connect and hear more from me by signing up for my newsletters, feel free to check out my website for more information.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience on social media was definitely something that I struggled with, and I believe that was because when I first started coaching there was a disconnection within myself. I knew what I was called to do and who I was called to help but I believe there was some type of disconnection within myself. I did not realize when I first started out, that I had been coaching long before I ever became a coach. I did not realize that I was already a resource for women. Coaching was so different from what I was used to doing that I did not know how to reach my audience. I would second guess myself and the content that I was able to produce. I can remember spending hours on a post or a template and then getting the courage to post it, only to receive a few likes or a couple comments. I would let it get to me until I became more confident in what I was doing and who I was called to be. I realize now that in order to grow an audience that truly relates to you, your mission, and purpose you must first be true to yourself. You must be yourself and be specific and clear about what you do so that you can not only grow your audience but reach your target audience. That is my advice for anyone just starting out. Just be yourself and get specific about what you do. Quality over quantity you don’t have to post to say you did it, make sure that when you do post it has value and it represents something that is important to you and your brand.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I remember when I first started my healing journey. I was lost, stuck, broken and confused so much so that I didn’t even know where to start my healing process. I remember one day I was on YouTube, and I came across a video by Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts and it was called Girl Get Up. I remember scrolling past it and looking for something else to watch. But the name of that video really spoke to me, so I went back, and I watched it and let me tell you everything that she talked about in that video was just want I needed to hear. Needless to say, I watched it over and over again. At the time I felt so defeated and broken. That video reminded me that I could get up again. After watching it time and time again I did just that. I knew that I no longer wanted to be that broken girl, I no longer wanted to be consumed by my past or my story. I wanted my life, my power and my voice back. That was the day that I decided I could no longer be that broken girl and I was no longer her. I started every morning with something positive and that set the tone for my day, it kept me grounded and inspired. From there I knew that I wanted to create something to inspire women who were just like me.
