Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rose Dernburg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rose, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Back in 2021 I had decided to sell my condo in Fort Collins, CO. At that time I was a working actress/model who had a bigger picture in her career. Where it all began: Back in 2019 I had started my acting/modeling career. I also had two jobs on top of that to keep me at float financially. As I was progressing in my career I kept thinking of moving out of Colorado, I just didn’t know where. Then in 2021 I saw a video on youtube of Tina Fey and Amy Poelher doing an improv show at the Second City in Chicago and I had made my decision. I wanted to be more in the comedic scenery and Chicago was a good place to start for that. I ended up selling my condo by the end of 2021, I left my boyfriend, friends, jobs… I do gotta say that that was and still is the best decision that I’ve made. I stayed at a friends house during the selling process, then I ended up staying in an extended stay after that my friends moved to Florida for about two months. I got tired of my situation and finally decided to move to Chicago. Once that I arrived, I stayed in an other extended stay for about 3 weeks until I had found an apartment with the help of a realtor. Since then I’ve been training as an actress and auditioning a lot.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Back in 2017 I had decided to go to a modeling audition, I fell in love right there and then but then a couples of month later I pretty quickly I fell through. About a year later my mentor motivated me to get back in the ring, it took me awhile but I ended up putting myself back out and decided to take this business seriously. As a model and actress discipline is important. It helps keep that hunger of learning the craft alive. As a model I did a little bit of everything, Runway shows, Photoshoots, Print… As an actress I mostly worked in the theater business but am slowly deviating towards the film industry. As silly as this may sounds I want to build my brand and make an empire out of it. I want to help others and make them understand how difficult and fullfilling it can be to build your own craft, putting in all those hours and sleepless nights. Something that I will always be proud of is starting and not giving up on myself. I am a pretty unique human being, always joyfull, always laughing, always motivating myself and others, always finding solutions to problems, always seing the bigger picture. My brand Rosie D-ee someday will find it’s place in the business.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
So when I first moved to Chicago I didn’t really know where to go or to start. I was taking some acting classes to keep up with my craft but didn’t know much more. It took me a while to figure things out. Working a 9-5 job that I didn’t really care about. Applying for acting productions with no response back from them. I did that for months then one day I started to give up and give in with the thought of maybe never getting a chance. Even so I tried keeping my moral up but day after day, depression and motivation was leaving my body. I continued working, searching, auditioning, sending self tapes… Then earlier this year things have finally taken a different turn. I got cast in a theater production, and a short vampirism film. I’m also cast in a different film production and I started doing some improv. A produceur reached out to me for a featured film as lead(unfortunetly I ended up not getting the role after a callback), but even so I’m motivated by it and want to continue and work harder because someday it will be me.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me there are several aspects. One of them is bonding. Creating relashionship is very important. It helps tou grow and people will remember you. Also an other aspect is recognition. Showing love to the people that you love and respect is the outmost thing. Supporting your friends will help them move forward. Having people supporting you will make you want to continue. Having people recognising your work is by far the best part of why you do what you do.
