Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea just from personal experience. I remember saying I wanted my own business and hair has always been apart of my identity since I was a child so it flowed. My mom use to keep my hair done and as I got older she would let me experiment with different hairstyles and color so I grew to love changing my hair whenever I want. When I tried extensions and wigs for the first time I fell in love. I just love the versatility of being able to change my hair and I love how I feel when I get a new hairstyle. I knew this would be worthwhile because it’s purposeful to me and the hair industry will not ever go out of style. I solve a problem that most hair brands do which is of hair related issues. Mine in particular is to give options and I will keep expanding that down the road.. I love having people try new things and them feeling confident in themselves and that is what makes me the most excited!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi. I’m Kayla Simone. My brand is Kay Simone Hair. I came up with this idea from personal experience. As I spoke before it’s always been apart of my identity since a little girl. My mom kept my hair styled and her bestfriend was a hairstylist who did my hair so I feel like it’s purposeful to me. I provide different types of lace frontal wigs. They come in different colors and styles. I have braided wigs, cap wigs and bob wigs as well. I have my own lace spray to secure the wig in place if someone uses spray and doesn’t prefer glue. What sets me apart from others is my identity alone. I take pride in making my brand a high quality brand and my style reflects that. I solve the problem of wanting to switch up your look, hair loss related issues, and just wanting a protective style. I’m most proud of my ability to create and to just continue building my brand through the process. I want anyone that supports me to just know I take pride in what I provide so I only provide high quality hair extensions and wigs. I strive to make you step out your comfort zone and try something new and also feel confident in yourself. Your hair is the first thing someone notices and it’s also the crown you never take off. One of my slogans is called Where Hair Can Be You.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
The initial capital needed for my business came out of my own pocket. I was working as a nurse at the time so I had money saved up to do so when first starting. I would take money out of my checks and put it to get my inventory to build up.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Whew. So I actually started my brand right before Covid. I had no idea that was going to happen and it affect the economy the way it did but I built cliente during that time. Covid as you know slowed down everything and in return caused the prices to raise on everything! At one point of time the borders of Korea were shut down to China and that’s where the lace was being produced so there was a shortage of transparent lace within the hair industry. I’m currently pushing through the recession and that has been hard as well and there were times I wanted to quit but the calling on my life and what Ive already done allows me to keep pushing. My resilience is out of this world because the average person would’ve quit. I see why most people quit but just imagine doing it through the pandemic and having no idea of how to run and build a brand cause there’s no blueprint. I’m still building so I’m proud of that.
