Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Devin Tinson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Devin, thanks for joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
Beauty school was coming to an end, and everyone had ideas of what they wanted to pursue once school ended. I had just started to focus on lashing two months prior to school ending. I wasn’t very good at all, but i was determined to get better. The determination of wanting to get better kept me focused as I grew. As time passed on, I saw myself getting better with repetition and the lengthy process of it became my new therapy. Lashes weren’t as popular are they are today, so when i started to provide it as a service….customers came. I had just graduated from beauty school, so my next thought was,”how do you start your new life?”. My next action, would be the first step into a new destiny for me. I acted on faith and took my skills and lash kit to work. I knew, i was capable and i knew the first start was ‘acting” the part until i became the part. I came home, made a flyer for lashes & sent it to all my friends to share with their friends. I got feed back immediately , but was left with 1 problem ..no location. Over time my focus was just trying to get clients, I set out doing house calls my first couple of months until i able to work from home. Once i got enough clients, driving became a hassle. I used i made from lashing to create an area at home. I decided to be home based first so i could work for free & get in ideal of what i was bringing in without salon rent. Through self promotion, word of mouth, and consistency I started to see my thoughts become my reality. I promoted and posted as a business. I took inventory and notes of what i was doing for business and things started to flow steady. I took note of what wasn’t working, and changed it. I listened to my clients, because they helped me grow in my craft and in my customer service. With one thought i took the first step, and i began to walk into the era of “becoming a business owner”. I act on my ideas and have faith. Everyday is a learning process and i am grateful to still be going after 2 years, Most businesses fail within that time frame. Getting out my mind, and acting them out has been the biggest thing to overcome. I’m excited for what is to learn and what is to come this year. I grow every year and I am open to whatever opportunities aligns with me.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I actually never really thought about being in the beauty industry, but it was my mom who gave me the idea. I always had a passion for beauty, and being beautiful. If you would’ve told me 10 years ago, what I would be doing now…. I wouldn’t believe you. I was a new mom, I had birthed new purpose and wanted to now live with purpose. I was looking to re-brand my life. I enrolled in school as soon as i was cleared and stepped into my new journey. I began school, I went in hungry and was surrounded by so many like minded individuals. Being around so much uplifting energy and like mindedness plays an important role into the person I am today. The beauty industry welcomed me with opened arms, and I came in ready to see what it had to offer. When, i stepped in, I was overwhelmed by everything I could do, so I choose something. I learned everything from facials to waxing. I choose to do Lash extensions. Lash extensions were something on the rise, it was challenging, and the pay was great. I sat out on my journey to start my life as a new esthectian. I didn’t have a lot of instructions to starting my business. If you ask me now, I would say learning to just do something without perfection gives you the chance to learn and fix the imperfections along the way. I had my Instagram, my skills, my beauty community, and lash supplies. I had those, so I made it happen. It wasn’t the dream when I first started. I was providing lash services, and had created a brand for myself, so it was considered a business now. I did the first step and now it was time to set myself out from every other, but how ? Honestly, it was easy. I decided to be myself, provide the best service, sharpen my skill & be fair. The biggest factor though, is my energy and being very intentional about my,”why”. I believe we are to be a service to each other and elevate/uplift each other. I pour intention into each lash session, even the quiet ones. I’ve found studying my craft help me personalize and be comfortable in getting creative with my lash sets. Though my main business attraction, is lashes. I know a major part in my business growth is the love, connection and growth that’s in it and is represented. I think beauty is a major key in helping us feel better, so i strive to make people feel pretty and be pretty. I enhance the inner you ,feed the inner you, and soul through sessions with my clients ! Its only the beginning of Lash Mami Lashes and there are so many more blessings to come from the business and what it stands for. I like to think of myself of a beauty healer, on the outer & inner. I know being a service to others is part of a bigger plan.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
If there’s one thing I would say I had to unlearn? it would be, picturing what the journey should look like. The best thing is to embrace the unknown but with certainty. Similar to having faith or what is. The more I stick to the actions of becoming what I want, I realize you don’t have to know every next move. With every effort we make, an opportunity can be created, offered, or handed to us, that we never imagined part of the plan. If you want something, simply do what it takes to get there. The way you think something will happen doesn’t matter when it does happen. What does matter is, how YOU made it happen. I trust the process, and whatever flows to me is a reflection of my work ethic. The best plan is to take action, trust the process and learn as you go.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth. When someone is able to talk about their personal experience and speak highly of it, it drives people to you. People want to experience the same customer service! I’ve always focused on quality over quantity. I make sure my clients have a great experience so they’re ready to tell everyone when they leave.
