We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr Slay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr Slay, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Around the time when I was preparing to graduate from high school I wanted to attend school for music production. I shared this desire with some older family members and was ultimately swayed to venture onto a different path. They believed that making music wasn’t a “real” job and wouldn’t be lucrative. So with that bubble popped I decided to major in business since having my own company was the only other career move that felt right to me. I landed myself in the world of finance. Quickly moving up the ladder in any job I accepted, but even with my success in the field I was never happy and felt unfulfilled. I began doing some side work as a stagehand where I assisted in setting up concerts for stars such as Beyonce and Taylor Swift. While being in that environment it re-sparked my passion and love for music, arts and culture. Though being around many like minded individuals at these gigs I never shared my original desire with them. All they new me as was the girl who worked in banking. Strangely my peers at these events began to continuously make remarks encouraging and trying to convince me that I should pursue making music. Without ever knowing if I had any musical talent or even interest in it. I would come home from those events and lay in bed with their voices stuck on repeat in my head. Replaying every encounter of multiple strangers telling me the same thing. It was like like it was haunting me. So I took a leap and began my music career. A decision I would gladly choose to make all over again. There was a time when I did wish I started my creative career sooner, but my perspective has changed. I’m thankful for the timing that took place. Now I know that I wasn’t ready to embark on that journey at that time. There was life I needed to live, So much that I needed to learn and experience to become who I was always meant to be.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
In a nutshell. I am a creator. My most known and applauded creation would be my music. I appear to the world as Dr Slay, the rapper and music producer, but I’m multifaceted. I have also created a business named Onomaly. Pronounced and meaning the same as the word anomaly. Something that deviates from what is standard, normal or expected. Which is our cultural code. On our website onomalystore.com you are able purchase apparel, book music services, have a starter website developed, obtain a social media manager ,and learn about other artists associated with this organization.
I believe what sets me apart is my courage to be vulnerable in a stance that goes against the societal norm. We are currently in a time where most people are afraid to be themselves. I want to encourage others and meet them right where they are in life with love and grace.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative for me is when someone reaches out to let me know how Ive impacted or helped them through a difficult situation. To create, for me ,is an instrument to help myself heal. To know that the byproduct of that is also healing others makes it a million times more special.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There is a book titled “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. This book is amazing! I recommend this book to everyone. It teaches you how to form good habits as well as break bad ones in a practical way. I truly believe if you implement the strategies given to you in this book you will see an improvement in your quality of life.
