We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dwayne Boone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dwayne thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
If I could go back in time I would have wanted to start my career sooner. I started working as a full time artist in 2011. Before that, I was working as a janitor. I was happy to make the shift in my career path. It’s been good because I’m making more money now and I get to make people happy with what I do. It would be have been even better if I started earlier.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a friendly people and animal loving artist who makes work about everything and everyone around me I’m inspired by such as flowers, sports, animals, pop culture figures, and black history. Some of my favorite mediums to use are pens, acrylic paint pens, pencil, and block prints. I got into making artwork as a child as soon as I started learning about shapes and colors and have been creating ever since. I make a variety of work including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, T-shirts, and I’m always trying out new things. I am most proud that I can make my own design and at the end of the day call it art.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal driving my journey is to always keep improving my own skill set because I believe you’re never done learning.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve been on Instagram since August of 2017 and since then I’ve grown quite a bit. I make sure to post new artwork several times a week at consistent times. I respond to my messages daily and will highlight new posts on my story to keep my followers engaged. Social media is a really important way to get people to know about who you are and what you do.
