We were lucky to catch up with Darcova Matrice recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darcova, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I embrace the position of being Intentional. The books I publish and the art I PAINT are on purpose. When you turn the pages you will read about the Woman’s Walk. The journeys of love, loss, triumph, tears, healing and feeling myself depict the total essence of Her- good, bad, ugly and everything in between. When you view the PAINTings you see the Evolution of the Woman. Be it the Girl with the AfroPuffs or the Woman with the Locs, you will be mesmerized by the colors and the lines and the details- her hair, her lips, her accessories- and simply want to know more about HERstory. When you experience me as a Creative, emotions are evoked, senses are stirred, conversations are conjured and you are moved to delve deeper towards the meaning…. or Create Your Own. I Create to show the many facets of Me….. and pray that you see some element of You.

Darcova, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Who Am I?
I Am Dr. Darcova Matrice King Triplett Pie-Pie I.S.I.S Michelle’s Lil Sistah….. or you can just call me EXTRA!
Disclaimer: You will either Love Me or look at me like ‘Oh, There She Go’ and both responses are Perfect ’cause I have learned to Freely Flow in Allllllll of My Extra~ness since this is just how God made me.
(This is the point where you can go’head and put on your Shades, if applicable.) Whispering…. Get you some Cute ones from LaVelma Gaston or LaDena Chisom.
#ItsHisLight
I was Created to Be Light and Shift the Atmosphere. There is absolutely nothing ordinary about me. Right, She Different. The way I teach is different. The way I write is different. The way I PAINT is different. I talk, walk, dress, think, move- I mean, my whole Vibe is Different. As I type I’m going ‘I need to Create an Event and call it #SheDifferent.’
(Note to Self)
I am a Creative who loves Words, Color, Birds of Paradise, Sunrises and…. PhotoShoots! I’ve been able to explore these loves through the roles of Daughter, Sister, Mother, Friend, Educator, Poet and Artist. I wake up Thanking God for Another Opportunity to Experience a New Day, go about the day Seeking Opportunities to Create Something New and fall asleep reflecting on Positive Ways I have influenced or been influenced by those I Encountered.
While My Favorite Poets are Keisha Pooler, Alex Johnson, Helki Pruitt, Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou and My Favorite Artists are Tammy Gammon, Vladimir Kush, Jean-Michele Basquiat and Kehinde Wiley, My First Inspiration to do what I do and be who I am comes from My Parents- Tommy King III and Bieace Brown King who have the Biggest Hearts on this side of Life.
So. Who Am I? I Am just a Girl from Atlanta who has committed to using All of My Gifts with the hope that when it’s all said and done, I will hear God say, “You Did That! Come On!”

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I once read a profound statement that said something like “If you’re a writer, WRITE. If you’re a painter, PAINT.” If you are just starting to build your social media presence, my advice is simple- SHOW US WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DO. I post pictures of people, places and things that inspire me. I post videos showing my creative process- step by step. I post recordings of me reciting poetry and reading quotes and affirmations. I post pictures and videos when I’m shopping for supplies and preparing for events. I post pictures from my PAINTing Parties and Book Signings and anywhere else I Am. I post pictures of and give Thank Yous to the People who Purchase and Support me along this Creative Journey. My Point- Folk Love a Good Product, but moreso, they appreciate the Opportunity to Connect to the Creation. And in the words on My Good Friend and Business Guru, Shan Thomas: “You Are Your Brand.” With that, I wear my own Wearable Art and #CuteTees and Lapel Pins…. and I take Pics Galore to (say it with me) POST! Social Media is all about BEing Social soooooo Be Strategic and Start Posting.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a Creative is the fact that I get to be my Unapologetic, AWEthentic Self. I am the Professional in the room with the Movers and Shakers- affiliated with prestigious organizations and institutions that develop curriculum, implement programs, evaluate processes, impact society…. and you get to call me Doctor. ANNNNNNND I am dat Flyyyy Gurl with the Flyyyy Hair PAINTing bold afros and ankhs, publishing poetry as I STRUT through (winking, waving, pointing, smiling and blowing kisses) and getting my #HealthySTRUT on at the Zumba Party with LaShay Reeves and Damika Davis or be it LineDancing with Alicia Taylor Williams on the flo’ right next to the loud speakers or 5k-ing with TyEsha Manigo in real real real real Cute Leggings…. colorful sneakers, big earrings and lavish (magnetic) lashes. I Absolutely Love BEing a Creative because I get to (on purpose) explore every inkling of my Ahmaaaazing~ness- no inhibitions, no hesitations- Just Free to Be Me as coined in song by Dr. Latrice Williams.
