We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eliza May a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Eliza, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My new song “Empress” that was released on February 17th is a powerful and uplifting anthem for women everywhere. The lyrics of the song encourage self-empowerment, self-love and self-acceptance, sending a powerful message to all the women out there who are breaking barriers and making their mark on the world. I hope to encourage my listeners to believe in themselves and in their own worth despite the obstacles they may face and doubts they may have. It is to make them feel motivated and inspired to take control of their own lives and live it as an Empress would.
Eliza, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I had a solid background in music, having started at a young age and finishing music school with merit by the time I was 13. But when I stumbled across an ad for DJ courses while working at a university radio station, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I thought it was a course on radio DJing, but it turned out to be about club DJing – something I knew nothing about. At the time, I couldn’t even tell the difference between techno and trance. But something about it drew me in, and I decided to attend the school anyway.
Before I knew it, I had landed my first DJ residency, and I was hooked. I loved it so much that I ended up going to Moscow twice to study at Audioschool and even took part in some DJ competitions, where I placed second.
It wasn’t long before my passion took me all the way to the USA, where I learned scratching from the legendary DJ Qbert. And now, as a US citizen who has DJed in over 10 countries and hundreds of cities, I couldn’t be more grateful for that unexpected turn that led me here.
The road to get here certainly wasn’t always easy, and there were plenty of challenges along the way. But through it all, one thing has remained constant: my love for music and the joy it brings to me and those around me.
So, if you ever find yourself faced with the opportunity to pursue a new passion or explore an unfamiliar path, I say go for it. You never know where it might lead you.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I think it’s all about videos nowadays. All the platforms are pushing short videos and if you have a skill to showcase I’d recommend to post as many videos of it as you can. Sooner or later you’ll notice the growth.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’d say one of my missions is to bring people together with music and also to help people heal. I recently started Reiki Youtube channel (you can find it if you search “Eliza M – reiki” on Youtube) where I play beautiful music shot at amazing places all over the world. After editing the videos I charge them with reiki as I’m also a reiki healer. So each of my mixes have healing properties. My other mission is to encourage people to explore and experience new cultures and destinations. Traveling leads to personal growth, promotes empathy and understanding towards different ways of life, it can be educational – providing the opportunity to learn about history, art, music, architecture and local traditions. So I’m trying to motivate people to travel more.
