We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hunter Chao a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hunter, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
The kindest thing people have done for me is believing in me. Tattooing was a very spontaneous journey for me. I had dropped out of college to pursue this and anyone that believed in me is the reason I am where I am today.
Hunter, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a self-taught, versatile tattoo artist. A lot of my branding and what sets me apart from everyone else is how personal I am on TikTok. Many of the people I have tattooed know me first before knowing I am an artist, so I feel like it makes them feel more connected to me.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One big goal of mine is to one day tattoo Miley Cyrus. I wish to better my craft everyday but meeting her and being able to work with her is a big one.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Most of my following was built after a bad breakup. I was posting to not only keep myself going, but to hopefully inspire anyone struggling with breakups to do the same too. I slowly transitioned to making tattooing my love life. Everyone that followed me watched as I fell out of love and right back in again.
