We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sierra Porter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sierra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe it takes hard work and professional relationships to be successful.
Sierra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Sierra Porter graduated from Georgia State University in May 2018 with a B.A. in Journalism. Porter has interviewed big names in media and entertainment, including Bobby Brown, Estelle, Jermaine Dupri, India. Arie, KISS’ Paul Stanley, Muni Long, Gangsta Boo, CeeLo Green, Andre 3000, Donnell Jones, Maren Morris, Boyz II Men, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Chilli from TLC, rapper Common, Phylicia Rashad, Jemele Hill, Tichina Arnold, and more.
She has freelanced for Rolling Out, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Black Star, and Atlanta Voice. Porter is also the founder of CeeSoDope.com, dedicated to music and entertainment. Porter was formerly the arts, culture, and entertainment reporter for the Des Moines Register. She attended New York University to obtain her master’s in the magazine and digital storytelling program on a full-ride scholarship, thanks to the National Association of Black Journalists. Maintaining an ambitious attitude is how she strives for success.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think the one thing that has helped build my reputation in journalism is consistency. I blogged for four years before getting my first full-time entertainment reporter role. I continued to work hard and foster relationships that helped me land at Billboard magazine.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is getting to tell other people’s stories.
