We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyshawn Miles a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tyshawn , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I came up with the name of the company while thinking of wanting something that would be catchy and I just didn’t want to use Tyshawn Miles Photography. I wanted to have my name in it but not in the typical way, so I looked up the definition of milestone: an action or event marking a significant change or stage in development. I thought that photos should mark a milestone in a persons life that they would like to come back and remember and that’s how I came up with Milestone Media & Photography.

Tyshawn , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So a little about myself, I’m a happily married husband of my queen Alissia Miles and I’ve been blessed to have a total of six children. Having spent a decade serving in the Army, I decided to swap the state of New York for Texas. I just made a transition from San Antonio to Dallas, and I love documenting all kinds of weddings both there and here. I consider myself to be an attentive and dedicated professional, and try to focus on as much detail as possible while I works. In addition to weddings I love capturing portraits and headshots whether outdoors or in a studio.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
So I remember at the time that I was considering starting back in 2019, I was working for a national photography company taking photos of students at schools, I was trying to build on it until I was making as much or more than my 9-5. In the course of that I remember being frustrated and miserable daily where I was working as the work hours were sporadic and then there was a mandatory layoff period in December. I talked things over with my wife about my business plan and she encouraged me to take a leap of faith and go into doing my own business full-time. Of course this was around the same time that COVID hit the nation and everything came to a complete halt, thankfully people still were looking for photos and the very beginning of summer things turned for the better as more people reached out needed wedding photography as they began to reschedule what they put off at the start of the pandemic.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Starting off I had no ideal of where to get clients from, I tried my hand at advertising on Facebook but I didn’t get much traction there. I stumbled upon a service called Thumbtack (which is like Angies list) and started getting clients there. The more client reviews I received on that site the more new clients reached out to book photography services, and then most of those clients became repeat clients or they referred their family and friends to me which helped to grow my business.
