Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Heather Hahn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Heather, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is there a heartwarming story from your career that you look back on?
I feel forever grateful I am blessed to lived out my passion and join people on their healing journeys. Because of this, it is hard to identify just one heartwarming story as each person has a unique situation and/or experience that has made their transformation equally as impactful as someone else’s. During my tenure working at a Statewide Inpatient Psychiatric Program (SIPP) for children, I witnessed insurmountable levels of healing and growth on part of many children who suffered with their emotional well-being and mental health due to complex (and often, chronic) trauma. To see these humans transform to where they were able to find a desire to live and reintegrate into society, school and social settings was, without doubt, heartwarming. I carry each one of their stories close at heart and cherish their vulnerability and openness to trust me with their stories so, together, they could live a more fulfilling and authentic life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a PhD-leveled, board-approved Licensed Professional Counselor and Supervisor who has been working in this field for over 14 years. I specialize in trauma, personality disorders, anxiety, depression, and addictions; however, am able to treat a multitude of experiences, symptoms, and diagnoses due to my extensive experience. I am a business owner and founder of Hahn Counseling Services and am grateful to provide counseling services to individuals within Texas. Furthermore, I am certified as a Trauma Informed Yoga Therapist and implement these techniques into the healing process, if desired. I am a firm believer in treating the person where they are at, without trying to change anyone. To me, the therapeutic relationship is imperative to establish for healing to occur. From there I treat the whole person as I believe in the mind/body connection and not just treating the cognitions.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
It is incredible to say aloud, but I’ve known I’ve wanted to be a counselor since the 4th grade. Because of this, I have never veered off the path to learning and growing my knowledge and skills within the profession. Therefore, if I could turn back time, I’d happily choose the same profession over and over again without hesitation.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe, to be an effective counselor, you need to focus on the therapeutic relationship. Without being able to create and uphold a safe space for your clients to enter and share of themselves, one cannot be successful within the field. Sometimes it’s about the space we hold for clients, the empathy provided, and the nonjudgemental atmosphere that help cultivate the therapeutic relationship.
