We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ayanna Mills-Ambrose a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Ayanna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I am Ayanna Mills Ambrose, CEO of Thanx A. Mills, LLC. I am a self-publishing consultant, certified business coach, professional writer, and 18-time Amazon bestselling author.

I work with women and entrepreneurs to get their message out by writing and publishing books because I believe that writing improves mental health, and becoming a published author increases confidence, credibility, and income.

I was born into a family facing a crisis – I was conceived through rape when my mother was 13 years old. While navigating the personal challenges that come with being born into such a situation, I have over two decades of success in sales and marketing in the insurance industry.

In 2019, I wrote my first book. My primary motivation for writing it was to help a friend. But until I resolved my worries about putting my story into a book, I was unable to finish writing the book. After I developed the courage to put my pain on paper and share my story, the book’s sentences came together, and I finished it in 46 days.

After my first book was published and revealed my birth story, it quickly gained notoriety and became a bestseller in five countries. Therefore, leading individuals to entrust me with their struggles because they felt relieved after hearing mine. This was an essential step in my journey as it fueled my passion and purpose of helping other women to alleviate the pain in their heads by putting it on paper to expand and make more impact in the world.

Through countless hours of intense study and training, I wrote and published ten Amazon bestselling books in ten months. I started coaching others to become Amazon bestselling authors with guaranteed results, and I have helped over 250 authors to become Amazon Bestsellers over the past three years.

What makes me proud about my business is that I make it okay for people to share their struggles because I share mine. Women have been silent for so long, and I am proud to give them an avenue to share their voices. They not only feel better, but it creates a ripple of positive outcomes because they help others to feel better by publishing their stories and lessons in books.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

A lesson I had to unlearn was silence-keeping my pain inside to avoid shame and judgment from others.

Silence is a silent killer, but it’s a usual practice in Black and African American communities. As black women, we deal with socioeconomic disadvantages, abuse, and an unfair justice system. It leads to a lack of trust in anyone or anything outside one’s house.

The pandemic of silence is passed down to generations. It begins with the golden household rule of “what goes on in this house stays in this house;” This rule breeds silence and births perfectionism, and I believe it has led to the rise of severe mental illness in African Americans.

I found inner harmony and confidence after writing about my pain and breaking my silence about my traumatic birth. Writing and sharing stories break the silence that keeps us trapped in our pain, and by publishing books, we not only get our message out but also provide hope and encouragement to others who are struggling. Breaking silence keeps me focused on helping others to put their pain on paper. Breaking silence by publishing books also enable people to find answers without fearing criticism from others.
