We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Allison Hughes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Allison below.
Allison, appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I love owning my own pet care business. It is a wonderful job where my co-wokers are of the four legged type. Whenever I go to visit a client, they are so happy to see me and are full of joy. Animals live in the moment and it teaches me to be present in the moment too. I worked in corporate America prior to starting Petmeisters Pet Sitting and it was a much different world. I love my new job and the active lifestyle that it provides.
Allison, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Allison and I started Petmeisters Pet Sitting in 2009 after returning from a year of living overseas in Independent Samoa. When I returned home, I wasn’t ready to go back to a normal 9:00-5:00 job, I was looking for something a little more casual. I was ready to do odd jobs here and there while settling back into the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. I sent an email listing all of the odd jobs that interested me. Being the President of my neighborhood association prior to moving overseas, I had a lot of local contacts to send this email to. Out of all the odd jobs I listed, pet sitting was the most needed in our area. After a few months, Petmeisters was born and I have never looked back. We are now one of the most successful pet sitting providers in Atlanta.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being dependable, honest and having integrity. Through the years we have built our business based on feedback from our clients. Many clients have come to us because they had a bad experience with their prior pet sitter. It’s sad because the pets cannot speak for themselves and some providers take advantage of that. At Petmeisters we operate with full transparency and we take our jobs very seriously. We build relationships with our clients (human and animals) and they become part of our family. We also follow through on everything we say we will do and treat the animals as if they were our own. This has helped build our reputation in the community and we are highly respected by all.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Our best source for new clients is word of mouth from our current clients. When a neighbor asks for a pet sitter on the community Facebook pages or Next-door, our clients show up for us and give us lots of recommendations. We take such good care of our clients that they want to share their experience with others. We do not spend any money on advertising or marketing. It’s 100% organic outreach through our clients.
