We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Krysten Hoover. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Krysten below.
Krysten, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I have three children and a wonderful husband who has always been the “bread winner” of the family. He drives for old dominion Freight line and had been over the road for most of our marriage and all our kid’s life. When i finished college, which I did after marriage and three babies, the goal was to get my husband off the road to spend time with the kids and myself. So that’s what we did. I worked several years at a local small accounting firm where I became the office manager after some time. I honestly believed it was my end game and I was happy there. After time went on the direction of the firm had changed and we were letting go of the individual tax return department which I was solely hired for. I knew then I was on the verge of losing my job. But I was asked to stay on and work on a big bookkeeping client part time. So, I did but it wasn’t supplementing my income enough to keep my husband home every night. So, I decided to start my own business. Thats when I called a friend who is also a business owner and asked her am I really going to do this? She said yes and signed up to be my first client. After 6 months of working part time for the small company and myself I was finally let go. I knew it was time to either jump ship or do this full time. There was fear and anxiety of failure and more importantly I feared losing my husband to the road again. It was a large risk but here I am today.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As a young child I always wanted more for myself then what I grew up in. I had a drug addict parent who at a young age I was the caregiver for. Years of poverty and watching the lack of ambition in my mother I knew that I needed a greater purpose. I did well in school, stayed out of trouble, but then my senior year came, and I noticed a boy I had known my whole life. I became pregnant at 17 and was told by many I was headed down the same path as my mother. That same boy after he found out we were pregnant asked me to marry him. After five years of marriage and three babies later, my husband was over the road full time to support us and let me stay at home with our babies. But as they grew older and the last was about to start elementary school, I knew it was time for me to do something. I had worked on and off for a family friend at her tax office and knew I loved taxes. I went to school for taxes and ended up with a degree in Business, associates in science and certified in taxes. From there I started working at a small accounting firm. After being released from there after several years I started Hoover Financial Logistics LLC. My main goal was to always keep my babies first. They are now 15, 13 and 11 and I love the flexibility I have owning my own business and being able to be a part of their lives, not just watch them from afar.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
When I was 18 and with a baby no one wanted to hire me. I was unreliable due to the fact I had a baby. A Family friend who owned a tax business let me work for her answering phones and scheduling appointments, with my baby girl in the bouncy seat next to me. I grew to love taxes then and helping people find ways out of tax struggles. That same lady when I lost my job in 2022 offered me an office in her building because she only dealt with taxes and many of her clients needed bookkeeping. I had grown to the point my bookkeeping was full time and tax season was looking impossible. So it benefited us both. She would do my clients taxes and I could focus on there every day bookkeeping. Being in the building I have met more people and reached more clients then ever imaginable. Being in a building with such reputable people with a well established business was the best decision I have made rather than started the business itself, far as business related.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I have gained many clients from being in the office I am in, but before that I was gaining them the old fashion way, word of mouth. There is no greater compliment than when clients refer others to me. I have gained more than I even knew I could handle. It’s a great reward watching client’s excel in their business and also being able to help them in their journey.
