We were lucky to catch up with Ben Luke recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ben, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
My biggest risk I could’ve taken was on myself. During Covid I think we all faced a point in time where we had to re-evaluate how we all wanted our life to be. For me that was opening up my own studio. Prior to that I was laid off from my job due to the health concerns so I really had to commit to what I knew to build something sustainable. In opening my own studio I was able to work alongside incredible engineers, producers, and artists as well. All because I decided to take a chance on myself. I didn’t know how it was going to turn. All I knew was that I had a skill and as long as I continued doing what I knew how to do I would see success
Ben, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Ben Luke. I am a singer/songwriter based in Saint Louis. I got into music late in life but nonetheless decided that it was what I really wanted to do. I started first as a producer then shifted to being an engineer. By that time I found a love for songwriting and being an artist myself. I’m doing so I was able to work with a wide array of artists from Afropop, Rnb, Trap, and edm artists across the country. So when it comes to working with clients you are working with someone who’s well versed in any avenue. It’s all about finding what works best. This upcoming year has brought incredible opportunities to my door simply by being diverse and I encourage every creative to do the same if they are able.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In this particular market I think it’s important for the consumer is that local can be just as good. It might take a little digging to find but that’s the beauty of music, the discovery!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is watching it go from a hobby to a profession. And then teaching and sharing what you know to the ones that where on the same path that you were on. Making those connections and watching those people grow into themselves is an amazing thing to watch
