We were lucky to catch up with Jasmine Marshea recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear your thoughts about making remote work effective.
On top of running my own business, I also have a full-time remote job. Before becoming remote I never had time to really promote or work for myself. Now that I have the luxury to do so, I’m able to focus on my craft throughout the day and brainstorm on my latest recipe. I now have the freedom to bake as much as I want to.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who may not be familiar with me or my work, my name is Jasmine Marshea. Sugars by Shea is my baby that was born in 2017. I was unemployed at the time and caring for a loved one battling Cancer. Baking was an outlet for me. It was a way to relieve the stress of watching someone I love deteriorate right before my eyes. I offer cakes, stuffed cookies, cheesecakes, etc. I will say I’m most proud of being able to pick up the pieces and bake again. I quit for almost 4 years until my best friend talked some major sense into me and I haven’t looked back. Business is growing and I’m most excited about what’s next to come. My main focus is building clientele and marketing. I can’t wait for all of my new & old customers to see what I come up with next!
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
This year for Valentine’s Day I decided to tap into my modeling side. I wanted a campaign for the bakery that would catch they eyes of people if they were scrolling on social media. Love is Lame came to me over night. Sometimes we get so caught up on not having a significant other or feeling bad about not receiving gifts for the holiday. “Love is lame, treat yourself.” – because all you really need is yourself to feel love. Stop waiting on someone else to love you and love yourself. The campaign didn’t go originally as planned when it came to photos because I didn’t get to feature my products like I wanted to, but hey the show must go on. The shoot featured myself with roses as well as a shot featuring a friend. I’m seen “cutting roses” in one shot similar to Morticia Addams.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
As far as becoming full-time, Sugars by Shea has taken over 75%. I foresee myself being a full-time baker by the end of the year. I can’t take the credit for all of this alone. I have God to thank for blessing me with such supportive family & friends. I realized things were getting serious as I was flying out to Maryland to do treats for one of my best friends welcoming her first child! She never tried any of my treats before hand, but she trusted me that much. From there things snowballed. Baby showers, birthday parties, house warmings, popup shops etc! The events just keep getting larger. Weddings are next on the list so be on the lookout for that as well.
