We were lucky to catch up with The Restless Duo Rachal & Emily Schmieder recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, The Restless Duo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
We began singing and performing together years ago. Before either of us were old enough to drive. It’s hard to pinpoint an exact moment. It had to be during our time growing up in either Portland, Tennessee or Franklin, Kentucky. We started because of the genuine happiness it brought us. A little later, we started thinking in terms of pursuing a professional career together, as a duo. We call ourselves “The Restless” because we believe there is a certain level of restlessness required for most goals in life. Our name reminds us who we are, even when we get tired sometimes. We love what we do, and hope we can inspire others to do what they love as well. We intend to keep going.

The Restless Duo , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Being sisters, we grew up doing a lot of things together. We are lucky to be sisters, but even more lucky to be friends. We experimented for a while with our sound. We started off doing a lot of country- pop covers to accommodate small festivals and events throughout the Tennessee and Kentucky region. We grew up singing together on a worship team. That definitely contributed to our use of harmony in our music. We sang pop and rock as well. We finally feel that we recently discovered our “sound,” though we are always learning more about ourselves and our music. If we had to classify our music now it would be soulful pop/ r&b with singer-songwriter influences like John Mayer and Alicia Keys. We love telling stories through our music. That will never change. We talk to each other about what each of us is going through- and it almost always translates into a song. The past few years we have both overcome a lot of personal struggles, and growing pains. The music we release next will certainly reflect both the struggle and the happiness on the other side.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Definitely seeing people’s reactions to hearing the songs live. That never gets old. We also love making women feel empowered through our music. Both women who are older than us, as well as girls who are younger/ still in grade school. Nothing feels better than someone walking up to us after a show and saying, “I know exactly what you’re talking about,” in reference to a song that we wrote.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
It takes time. And non-creatives can sometimes be judgmental of people who are pursuing something out of the ordinary. We had to learn to stop caring what people think. At the end of the day, we are doing this because we love it. We would be lying if we said it has been easy. There is so much content out there. It can be difficult to get people to stop and listen to your music as an independent artist. But every month- every year. We have grown closer to where we want to be. And we just want to keep going.
