We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Briyanna Ruff. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Briyanna below.
Hi Briyanna, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful , I believe the most important thing you need to do is be willing to take risks. A quote that has recently changed the way move in life is “If you want something you have never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done.”
In the beginning you may be scared to try your new ideas or promote your work because you’re scared of what people will say or the outcome but you never know what will happen until you try, and the truth is the same amount of people that love your ideas and support you, there are an equal amount of people that could not care less and will not support you. But that does not mean you will fail, it means that you have a specific target audience and those are the ones you focus on until you expand and grow. That is also another key to being successful, lock down who you aim to please because they are the most important to the growth of whatever you are doing.
Among all, believing in yourself , performing at your highest potential and never giving up are other important things that will deem you successful no matter what because these are things people never forget.
Briyanna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Briyanna Ruff and I am a Graphic Designer. I begin graphic designing when I was in middle school going into highschool and I wanted my own clothing brand. I’ve been drawing since daycare and I’ve always been a person who figures out how to do things on my own and I wanted to know how I could get my art on t-shirts without spending a bunch of money to do it when I didn’t have a job. Google brought me to the idea of graphic design. I would scan my drawn picture to the computer and trace it. The application was similar to adobe illustrator and I actually became very interested in the process and begin to self teach my self on adobe applications. I then ended up going to school for graphic designing in my later years and it landed me here today.
I currently freelance under my brand BRDesign as a brand designer helping people bring their brands to life .Clients come to me when they have come up with a new business idea or they wish to rebrand their company look. I do everything from the logo to packaging to their website design to even product photography. I think its important that brands have consistency so I offer many services to keep everything localized for my clients.
Along with this I have recently curated the 750 Music and Arts Festival. This is an event tailored for new and upcoming artist in ATL to showcase their work to many people in the surrounding community. I love to have this opportunity to bring a bunch of like minded people together in a creative and fun space to be able to network and gain inspiration from each other and also grow their brand.
I think it should be noted that when I do work for clients I am very client orientated. I support unique and interesting ideas and that’s exactly what humans are. Everyone has such amazing ideas sometimes and they just need help bringing them to life. I use my knowledge of graphic designing and art and I help translate ideas from my client to their consumer. I never impose my personal ideas unless asked I only help enhance their idea and help make it the best it can be. My personal art comes through my personal work, my festival, my other businesses I do on the side such as bartending.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
When I’m doing work with someone throughout the process its possible we become some what friends, So even after the work is done I offer constant maintenance , I check up on them see how business is going and I offer discounts on future work even. I also automatically support their business on social media whether it be reposting post liking photos or even referring their work to people I know.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve heard that Graphic Design is not Art. I personally dislike the saying. You hear Art is subjective and left up to interpretation and doesn’t really need to mean anything to the viewer and graphic design is functional and must make sense but in both cases the artist still has their meaning behind it whether we like it or not. Its a communication art which is hard to learn. I believe everything is subjective however.
Once something is released into media the meaning is immediately changed. The art behind graphic design I believe is being able to make someone see the meaning you intended with visuals and method while still looking pleasing to the eye. That also doesn’t mean everyone will get it because people look at everything differently regardless.
