Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nathan Mastrud. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nathan, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry
Right now in the tattoo industry there are so many trends with social media. Everyone has so much information at their hands and that has changed the dynamics of the traditional shops. We don’t need flash walls or walk in traffic. People know what they want and have these ideas before they come in the door. Everything is accessible. This trend will dictate the continuing popularity and layout of shops moving forward.
Nathan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been tattooing for around 12 years now but creating art for many more. I started with a focus on painting and mixed media such as glass blowing and along the path found tattooing. As covid passed there was a chance to be on my own and simplify the process of business for my clients. I still paint and do mixed media art but not as much as I’d like.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The best way I have found to build clientele is to respectful their time. Many clients have cut into their time and life to receive art from me. If I make them wait or discredit their day then that will ultimately hurt that relationship. It’s taxing being up on emails and messages through different outlets but at the end of the day they are paying for a service and there needs to be mutual respect between artist and clients.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Of course the most effective way is social media these days. It’s a great tool to display art of any form especially tattoos. I do struggle with posting frequently, it’s easy to get into the routine of creating and moving to the next project at hand. Each year I keep saying I’ll do better and one year I’ll get in the routine.
