We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daimon Glenn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daimon below.
Daimon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
One of the biggest trends that I am seeing in the industry is the switch to videography being a standard in every wedding. Wedding videos are becoming more cinematic, and are really capturing the emotion of the day better than ever before possible. They are including hd audio, cinematic movements of the camera, and even including drone videography as a standard as well. All of these elements enable more creative, memorable, and emotional content. In face, some of the nest wedding filmmakers are actually able to weave the wedding films into a story, and therefore they become an actual narrative film, that is interesting and memorable for all to watch, and leaves viewers in awe.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up and lived in Maryland for much of my early life. I started out, and found my love for photography in high school. I, like many others, took photography as an elective. I was amazed at some of the photos I would see in magazines, and noticed that they were much different looking than the photos that most people commonly took, and I wanted to know how to make my photos look more like those. I would have probably pursued photography more as a career initially if it hadn’t been for a deep dislike that my photography teacher and myself had for each other. After that, i kept practicing photography as a hobby, but nothing serious. Many years later, I married a model, and traveled with her, making contacts and learning things here and there from the various photographers that she shot with. One photographer in particular, who was in fact a famous photographer for many reasons, kind of took a liking to me, and took me under his wing. He decided to teach me some things, and give me tools and advice that would help me to further myself as a photographer and an artist. Because my wife was a traveling model, our house became known as a model house where traveling models could stay when they were in the area. After I become divorced from my previous wife, models would still ask if they could stay with me. They started asking if I wanted to do a photo shoot with them in turn for them staying at my house, and all of the sudden, I had a portfolio with some really great and known models. This attracted the attention of a DC nightclub, who asked me to photograph a big event that they were hosting, Bow Wow’s 21st birthday. I agreed, and also saw this as a big opportunity to advance my career as a photographer. I called up every photography agent that I could find, and asked if they would take me. I found one right off the bat. After I photographed this event, I had a front page cover and a several page feature in a national magazine, and several European magazines as well to start off my career. From there, I reached out to several magazines and asked if I could shoot for them. I started shooting for Hip Hop Weekly magazine, and eventually became one of their staff photographers. I worked for them for a few years, and traveled all over the US shooting concerts and music events for them, as well as features in other magazines as well. I was then asked by DJ Unk to film a music video for him, without any knowledge of shooting videos. It turned out well, and from there I went to NYC and studied filmmaking at the Digital Film Academy. I then moved to Florida, got married, and started doing wedding photography and videography, and living the family life.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish that I had known more about social media marketing earlier in my career. I relied solely on word of mouth, in person networking, and making myself as visible as possible. I believe that with social media marketing, I would have been able to expose myself to many more people, the correct demographic of interested people, and also to grow my business much faster.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
While I was working for Hip Hop Weekly magazine, I was at the top of the game. I was constantly booked and busier than I have ever wanted to be. I had many celebrities and their managers numbers and information in my phone, I was known and had good connections at many places I went to. When I moved to Florida, I had to start over from scratch. I had to accept weddings and jobs at a fraction of what I was making before I moved, and they were very inconsistent as well. My wife got pregnant, and I had to get a more stable job. I started working with kids with autism, and although I did well in this job, it didn’t fulfill me. I still had an artistic need that had to be filled. I started back doing photography and videography as a hobby on the weekends, and I quickly built a more modern portfolio. After my portfolio got to where I wanted it, I started getting bigger and better jobs, as well as more job offers. After this, I talked with my wife, and decided with her support to go full time into photography and videography. I overcame the obstacles of moving to a new market, starting my business all over again from the bottom, and having to support my family with a small child.
