Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ambrose Jackson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ambrose thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Actually, I think the timing for The 1937 Group is just right. My professional background is in hospital and medical group management, so having over a decade of experience in another highly regulated industry has proven invaluable. However, I’ve always had a relationship with the cannabis plant and maintained a connection to the culture. As we look at the regulated landscape over the last 8-10 years, we’ve seen multiple billion dollar national cannabis companies formed. But they are all missing that flair and authenticity that The 1937 Group brings to the table. People across the country are waiting for a group like us to support, having lived in markets that are dominated by corporate cannabis. We have so much support right now, I think the timing couldn’t be better.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Sure. My first career began after completing my degree in Healthcare Administration at the University of Illinois-Chicago. I initially completed a couple internships under hospital CEOs, before obtaining my first management role and ascending to a Vice President position within six months. However, it was the field of process improvement that ultimately caught my attention. I eventually left a management role to pursue an expertise in operational excellence, implementing models based on the Toyota Production System and Lean Healthcare. These experiences, set me up perfectly to enter the Craft Grow and Retail spaces and create organizations that are known for quality and excellence as well as a true focus on the consumer experience. This foundation is what I want people to understand that our organization is built on.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Definitely! I’ll start by sharing two things someone told me early on as I was starting my journey. The first one is, “If you’re looking to get rich quick, this is not the industry for you”. I recall when I started down this path in 2018, there was so much optimism in the air and everyone had this mentality that getting into the industry would make you a millionaire! The second statement said to me early on was, “The real work starts once you GET the license.” After raising initial funds, submitting a 1,000 page application, participating in a lottery with thousands of others, waiting 2-3 years to be awarded a license, and ultimately being 1 out of 3 groups, I think, out of 7,000+ applications to win one of every type of license we applied to in Illinois. It’s now 2023, and after 5 years, I still haven’t made a dime (he laughs), I’ve actually only lost money personally investing in my businesses. However, I’m not worried because I see the path forward and know our time will come. It’s just not easy or quick! So both of those statements are 100% accurate.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Really we just focus on being about the people, but that who we are. I don’t feel a need to appeal to everyone in the market. I just focus on doing me and those who appreciate that and relate to it, will gravitate toward it. I guess you could call that finding your niche and sticking to it.
