We were lucky to catch up with Nyk Cage recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nyk thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
The best investment I’ve made was investing in myself. Really honing in on what my gifts are, my expertise, and passion.
Next, I took those 3 facets and found a way to create a service that would benefit my core audience.
As a result, I found music to be the art and/or service that I would use to motivate & inspire. From picking the right instrumental to creating the subject matter, all of these things draw the creativity out of me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m originally from Louisiana, graduated from LSU, so you know the music and food culture plays a lot into my craft.
Growing up, it was a heavy dose of down south trap music coupled with the oldies my ma would play on Saturday mornings as we cleaned up.
I started writing music around the age of 9. I would write raps on index cards after downloading instrumentals on Limewire lol. I would hide the raps under my typing keyboard.
One day my ma found my raps and instead of asking me about them, she wrote her own rap and left it for me to see. My ma’s rap told me I didn’t have to curse and that I could rap about my everyday life, & that would be cool enough.
For that moment on, I felt encouraged to write & rap. I would sit for countless hours, listening to the same instrumental, turning over ideas.
The thing that I’m most proud of is my consistency and growth. From the subject matter, to different cadences, I can see the growth over the years and that motivates me to keep going.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The Richest Man In Babylon is a book that change my outlook on a multitude of things. The way I looked at money and how to generate it, changed dramatically due to the gems found in this novel.
One’s mindset is extremely important in pursuit of any goal. This particular novel shows you how the main character restructured the way they think and perceive to achieve their ultimate goals.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I cannot do it alone!! No matter what the venture may be, I’ll need assistance and I’ve been working on being more open to receive help & guidance.
I’ve tried to write, mix, and master projects on my own. I would leave projects unfinished due to being burnt out. Once I began to delegate tasks and trust those put in place to help me, my creativity skyrocketed.
You have to give people space & grace to do what they are good at. And trust the process.
