There is so much to learn from investments that went really well as well as those that went really poorly and so we asked some of the wisest creatives and entrepreneurs in the community to tell us the stories of their best and worst investments.

It may sound a bit counterintuitive, but the best investment I’ve made in myself is taking the time away to be still. Resting my mind, body, and spirit has done more than just provide space for recovery and rejuvenation. When I can achieve a still mind space, the answers to problems I’ve been navigating seem to come to me with ease. This is the power of what I call “The Great Me-Set.” Read more>>

The best investment I made in terms of time and money was paying a boarding/training facility for single and dual-purpose police k9s to certify as a narcotics, tracking, explosives, and apprehension dog trainer. I paid $10,000 to basically work a full-time job for 3 months, but it was there that I really learned what I needed to know about kennel management, building a team, sanitation, building logistics, and basically all the skills I needed to run a 40 dog kennel with multiple employees. The best investment I truly can say I have ever made, was on myself! I always encourage others to bet on yourself first before you can bet on someone else. How can you be a helping hand to others if you can’t help yourself? Many times in my life I put others before myself and would soon find out that they wouldn’t have done the same for me. After shopping around for months, she finally gave me the ok… We had it delivered about 2 weeks before a Forth of July event. That event was a true test for us. Financially, that event paid for half of the new smoker. Read more>>

The worst/best investment decision I made was when I “gave” over $1M to an online relationship and found out it was a financial/emotional SCAM. My husband, of almost 26 years, died suddenly and after 6 months of running his company, working full time at my position as Sr Treasurer in a county school, I followed the encouragement of friends who said “You need a life” and they meant get back into dating – at age 52! The two year relationship, online, was “safe” as we chatted about family, life, business….everything. Read more>>

Each investment in my business has been purposeful and useful to the growth and understanding of my entrepreneurial journey. I have certainly spent money on things that I felt would be helpful to my business. Conversely, I have invested money, time and energy that wasn’t recovered. Ideally, I would like to say that there were no bad investments and won’t be anymore. Although that is not my story, I will not deny that the lessons haven’t always been warm and fuzzy feelings.
