We recently connected with Rolanda Watson and have shared our conversation below.
Rolanda, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
First of all, my mission in life is – Accepting people where they are and taking them where they want to be.
I accomplish this mission with a focus on tax strategies and business coaching. As a tax strategist for over 25 years I have listened to many people share dream, visions and desires. However, they did not have the insight and guidance to help to them started. In 2018 I decided to stop listening and start helping. Our practice listens to your vision and then we offer to establish the business structure, provide tax guidance and we coach you through the infancy stage of your business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started full-time in the tax industry in 1996 as a part of a family business. I am a second-generational tax professional, and we serve the lower to middle income earners. That was a place where I learned so much about the pains and problems of business owners. Business owners with the passion to excel in their industry without the tax/financial knowledge to guide them. In 2018, I began my practice to focus on providing a holistic approach to the business owners’ “tax/financial world” I used some of the same principles I had taught others to build a 6-figure tax & accounting practice. As an Enrolled Agent credential by the IRS, we provide a holistic approach to our client’s tax world, providing preparation, planning, advisory services and more. I am a collaborating author for “Tax Strategies for Small Businesses” – this is an amazon bestseller.
We offer:
Current & Tax Filing Service
Tax Planning/Advisory Service
Solving Tax Debt with Resolution/Representation before IRS
Bookkeeping & Payroll
Business Coaching
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Since 1996 I was an assistant in another tax practice. In 2018, I made the decision to walk away from the family tax business and clients that I had grown up with. I like to say that I started fresh with experience. I was scared, challenging but so exciting. Everything was the same and new at the same time- from choosing software, coaches, marketing, changing the sacristy mindset. Every part of me was afraid but I knew that God was with me every step of the way. Did I make mistakes, yes – do I have regrets, no! As a business owner, I believe that continuing to expand your mind is a part of the package. Along with that expansion come struggles. If I handle them correctly, these struggles can make me better.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I would say that the lesson that I am unlearning is ” Understand & walking in my value” I am a natural giver. I give time, knowledge, resources – whatever is needed to help someone else. I have had to learn that I am not help them or myself by not allowing people to invest in the knowledge/resources. Once I started setting boundaries and valuing my time and allowing others to invest in their growth, I have seen results in their businesses.
