We recently connected with Kirra Collins and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kirra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I have always had a passion and drive to accomplish my goals even as a young adult. Graduating from a community college with two Associates Degrees before even graduating high school. Later graduating with top honors with a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Colorado Boulder. I then placed my education and career on hold to raise my two amazing boys for eight years.
But then my defining moment I realized I was trying to balance it all and be everything to everyone but neglecting myself. I made my family the priority, which was great for them, but I lost myself somewhere along the way. I decided to start lifting, taking cardio classes, studying nutrition, and applied it day-in and day-out, and within six months I had not only lost the 30 pounds I had gained after having my first two kids, but I had completely transformed my body! Needless to say, the experience was life changing. After it, I felt compelled to pursue a career as a certified personal trainer, adaptive fitness instructor, and nutrition specialist. I wanted to empower, educate, and inspire other women to transform their bodies and regain a renewed sense of self — just as I had.
Shortly after starting my fitness journey, I started my own multi-faceted health and wellness company and became an elite personal trainer for Gold’s Gym and for the last few years helping to transform the bodies and lives of so many women. Fitness has helped me develop and strengthen my character, as it gave me so much more confidence in myself. As well as, always being “real” and staying true to myself. I have built a lot of new friendships and have met a lot of great people by just being me. In life you must stay humble and be grateful. I always try to be positive and encourage others to do the same. Your attitude influences everything you do in life and how you get along with others. When you work hard and love what you are doing, the rest falls into place.
Kirra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Most fitness enthusiasts can’t seem to do just one thing, and I am no exception. I’m a full-time Mom, Fitness Influencer, Elite Personal Trainer, Contest Prep Coach, Nutrition consultant, Adaptive & Inclusive Trainer, Fitness Model and started a non-profit for the adaptive fitness industry. I get to do what I love everyday of my life, coaching and training women and adaptive athletes to help them create the best version of themselves inside & out. I love helping women and my athletes have FUN while SURPASSING their goals! My passion is working with women helping them reach their personal best! As a competitor myself, I know how difficult it can be to balance everything. I have been in your shoes and know the struggles you go through in your quest to your competition and fitness journey.
So, I put everything into the last couple years trying to achieve that goal. So, I started a fitness company called Iron Angels. The first ever all female personal training and competition team. From lifestyle clients to first time competitors to those who just want to live a healthier lifestyle, Iron Angels has been a guide to so many women who have reached their goals and made their dreams come true. I provide a realistic and personalized approach empowering women to thrive and become the best version of themselves.
Iron Angels is more than clients and athletes it’s a community. Individual journeys can be difficult. Iron Angels is a community that understands that to be our best, we need to be surrounded by a community of caring women who want the best for themselves and each other. When you have the support and encouragement from a team, a community., a family.! You can do anything and reach your dreams and goals.
Iron Angels provides in person and online coaching that’s tailored to you. Helping you reach your fitness goals with flexible programs for competition, fitness, nutrition and personal growth..
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I have always been a very competitive person and when I quit playing sports, I was looking for something to channel my competitive nature. All I knew is that I wanted to be a top athlete, model, bikini competitor and elite personal trainer. So, I put everything into the last couple years trying to achieve that goal. So, as I became better at competing, modeling, and training, I started working with more local photographers to build my portfolio to give me a more fitness based looks to market myself. I started networking on social media, gaining sponsors, and working with small businesses. The more connections, collaborations, and interactions with other professionals in your same industry the more you build your reputation.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
As a fitness professional, a problem you might want to have is dealing with too many personal training clients. But as silly as it sounds, this could actually become a problem. The worst thing you can do as a personal trainer is to kill it with your marketing, get a whole bunch of clients to sign up for your service, then provide them with a bad service experience because you are overwhelmed. This is something you should really think about when creating your service offerings and of course your pricing options.
If you price your services too low, you might get a lot of people to sign up, but will you be able to provide all of these people a good quality service? If you price your services higher, you might get fewer clients to sign up, but you might provide them with better service. This could be because you know how much they are paying for your services so you feel obligated to do a better job and also because you have fewer clients to deal with, so it’s easier to provide better service. There are 4 strategies I can recommend to ensure you are still able to continue growing your online personal training business without sacrificing quality and client experience or a second of your personal free time.
If you are just starting out my recommendation would be to start by taking on a few clients first to see how much time it actually takes you to build programs and provide good service. Once you have put a group of clients through your program you can begin to solidify your systems and will have a better idea of how many clients you think you could manage at once.
