We were lucky to catch up with Lori Peltier recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lori thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am extremely happy being an artist. I have had a regular job, and after years of realizing that I was giving my time for someone else’s benefit, I decided that it was time to put forth the time and energy towards benefiting myself and my family. I taught music and art to students ranging in age from pre-k – adults for over 15 years. I am now producing and running my own brand called Sea of Life. It allows me to be an artist and represent myself through the brand. There are many platforms out there to establish your creative side. It sure is a lot more fun than sitting at a desk from 9-5!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started out as an artist at the age of 10. My mom took me to a neighborhood framing shop that gave art lessons in the back. I painted for years, but then tried new endevours throughout the years. I tried acting, dancing, being a musician, and skateboarding. My true passion ended up being art, music and skateboarding, which I still do to this day. I produce products that show my love for the ocean and my artistic abilities. Sea of Life represents these components whether it’s a t-shirt, a painting, or any other product that I produce. I finally am doing what I love and am able to share it with the world. Years of soul searching and dedication has placed me in a happy place in my life. I am a proud mother, wife, sister, daughter and artist all in one. That’s what Sea of Life represents.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
If there’s any advice or insight that I may share about my journey, that I feel can make a difference for better understanding of what an artist goes through, is this. There are many layers to how an artist goes through life and is perceived. An artist is special because they are thrown into an ocean of the unknown and have to navigate through a vast ever changing of the tides. Going through the natural inertia of the energy and pool of the unknown without a manual. One has to be ready for the pounding dangerous currents that occur underneath. As Jon Kabat-Zinn said, “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resiliency is built in time. It makes you stronger, wiser, and much more clear as to how to navigate as an artist. It doesn’t matter what type of art. If we are able to find what we love, we will find that inner peace. It becomes our feel, food, and muse for the day. We need to stay open, loving, and truly quest for expanding our comfort zones. This leads to inner peace and true power to seek what we want to create and pursue every day. Don’t be inflexible and be stuck on your own confined box. We need to be fluid like water. Go into every single crack and crevice of life. Just like the Sea of Life. It will change your life and life becomes worth living.
