We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Victoria Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Victoria , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
There have been several unexpected problems that I have faced in my business. The first one is pricing. It took me a while to truly get my prices to where I wanted them to be. There is photography gear and other business purchases that need to be taken care of as well. I feel like I am finally getting to where I want my prices to be. Another issue that will come up from time to time is a technical malfunction. Whether it’s from your camera or from your computer, things will stop working and you will have to purchase one of the two all over again. Work alway’s continues for me once that is taken care of. Scheduling photo sessions has been an issue for me from time to time also. I reach out to potential clients with my availability due to my busy schedule and busy life. It always seems to work itself out though.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Victoria Johnson. I am the owner of Skye Breese Photography. I am originally from Independence, Louisiana, but now reside near Livingston, Texas. Livingston is about seventy five miles northeast of Houston. I also have roots in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. My love for Photography began when I was just nine years old. But, before the age of nine, I remember my late father and his Photography that he did as a hobby. That was the driving force of me getting into Photography for myself. I’ve alway’s enjoyed taking pictures throughout my life. I consider myself an all around Photographer. I capture portraits, events, powwows, documentary style, street, and landscape images. I enjoy all of these genres and I believe it is what sets me apart from other Photographers. Two of my Street images were exhibited at a Pop up Exhibit in San Antonio in October 2019 and another image of mine was exhibited at a Fine Art Gallery in the Houston area in March 2020. I am a monthly contributor to Native Hoop Magazine with several other publishments and awards under my belt as well. Two photos of me are published in the PBS book, American Portrait, The Story of Us, Told by Us also. I am most proud of all of these accomplishments. It hasn’t been easy but I never gave up once. I continue to submit my work because I know it will open more doors for me and my work. I want potential clients/followers/fans to know that I work hard on my photo work and enjoy sharing it with everyone.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
It’s real simple. It’s social media and promoting myself on Instagram and Facebook. I started sharing my work on TikTok also.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy has been continuously promoting my work.
