We recently connected with Katie Stumbo and have shared our conversation below.
Katie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I am one of six kids; my dad is an entrepreneur, and my mom was a stay-at-home homeschooling mom. Life was organized structed and productive. We worked hard until it was time to play and then we played hard. My parents worked very hard at giving us the opportunity to pursue any passion. When I told them at 15 years old, I wanted to be a pilot they never hesitated. They immediately researched options and got me enrolled in Civil Air Patrol. It was there that I was given my first hours at the flight controls. by 17 years old I was a pilot! Most kids are barely driving, and I was flying an airplane. I vividly remember taking my dad (a non-pilot) flying. At 17 it didn’t really hit me how amazing that was! He had complete trust in me to fly us to our destination and back in one piece, he didnt know how to save us if I messed up. Years later when I started flying again, I had the honor of finally taking my mom flying, it was the most surreal experience in my life.
I learned early on through countless stories like this one that anything can be accomplished with hard work and fearless perseverance. By watching my parents attack life, struggles, obstacles and business while raising six kids and homeschooling us I learned that my potential is limited by my own mind and fears. Having been raised this way I have never wanted something and thought I can’t have that. When I wanted to go back to college after kids, when I opened my gym, when I started flying again and eventually became a certified flight instructor, I found a way. It is has never been a question of if I can do it so much as do I want it bad enough. If I want it bad enough I know that I can achieve that. That level of confidence was built into my watching my parents while they raised us.
Katie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As the founder of Go Conquer Fitness, I am very proud of the work I do! It is very satisfying to help someone reach for great personal wellness heights and achieve them.
With my one-on-one clients, I love the personal attention that it allows. I get to know each one of my clients on a deep and personal level, and the more I know, the more I can directly tailor the workouts for them. In my one to one clients, I have had a 76-year-old women with bilateral knee replacement gain 100% range of motion and hiked Machu Pichu! I have had clients in their 90’s be able to maintain enough independence to stay in their homes, and for them that is priceless. I have 100+ pound weight loss clients that blow my mind!
They have had to change everything about the way they live and eat to achieve this, and they do! It is an incredible journey to be on with them. As amazing as these massive weight loss achievements are I get as much joy from them as I do from clients who gain strength, reduce inflammation and pain enough to be able to do simple things you and I take for granted, like having the mobility in your shoulders to brush your hair without pain, get out of a chair without help and so much more!
In addition to the one-on-one clients, I also teach classes such as boot camp, circuit and stretch, and core classes. Check out my website to get the most current class schedule. I love the comrade of these classes. Some of my members have been with me for ten or more years! I keep the classes challenging, fun and motivational. With my experience, education, and attention to detail I can safely push each client to achieve the success they are looking for.
One of my favorite modalities I use at Go Conquer Fitness is PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation). It is a great technique designed to increase flexibility, decrease pain and the risk of injury. It is great for almost anyone from athletes trying to stay at the top of their game to someone with frozen shoulder, sciatica, restless leg syndrome, low back or neck pain.
I am also strongly convicted that there is so much bad information out there that we have to educate people. I also appear semi regularly on the Rosie On The House radio program on KTAR 92.3 FM several times a year as well as speaking engagements. Education is at the very heart of empowering ourselves to be successful at any venture. I thoroughly enjoy speaking either on the radio, in person at groups or on Media segments.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Your business is only as good as its reputation. I have worked hard to perfect my craft and try to be brutally honest with an individual on if I can truly help them0. By being honest and producing results I grow and strengthen my reputation. Additionally, by building my professional network and having a network of physicians I trust helps me to truly help the individuals I can, and guide the ones I cant to great care. The results my clients get speak for themselves. It is truly amazing to watch people regain their lives and become the parents, grandparents, world travelers they always dreamt about being.
Having the practical application that backs up my education and training speaks volumes on the training floor. Although I never went back to get my Doctorate for many reasons most of my clients call me Dr. Katie.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
There is no question that my professional contacts and word of mouth has been my most effective strategy for growing my business. When you provide a good service in a friendly atmosphere and get clients the results they are looking for you business will grow organically. This goes hand in hand with my reputation. The stronger the reputation the higher quality referrals will come your way. I also take every opportunity presented to me to do public speaking. I like to get out in front of people and spread good information. I have presented for many large groups, a variety of women’s groups, and on media outlets such as channel 3 and KTAR. Having the backing from these recognized entities also builds credibility to growing my clientele.
