We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Higgins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Taylor, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Taylored Design Co. was derived from my name. The addition of the suffix “-ed” to the end of my name signifies something that has happened. I wanted people to know that “Taylor did that.” Ending things off with “Design Co.” seemed to be a nice flow and an umbrella for everything that I do. To be in a position where I am able to do so many different things in the creative realm, it has been nothing shy of a blessing to see my brand showing up in multiple facets of design.

Taylor, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born and raised in Dayton, OH, and I graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2013 with a BFA in Fine Arts. I am a mother, an educator, a creator, and lover of all things artistic—so much so that I consider myself to be a creative “everythingist.” Most people ask me, “what is it that you can’t do?” I jokingly (but seriously) reply, “I can’t flip pancakes and I don’t particularly love math.”
I’ve done everything from teaching art to kitchen and bath design. While I never imagined that I would craft my life around photography and design as a full-time thing, these days I couldn’t imagine what life would be like if I hadn’t. In the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, I quit my full-time job to pursue my creative endeavors and opened a studio in 2020. I specialize in photography, graphic design, small business branding, website design, content creation, and education. My mission and passion is to be a one-stop creative hub, helping to cultivate resources and education for underserved communities.
My clients are primarily minority, small business owners who need help keeping up with today’s non-stop demand for content. This phrase has become seemingly cliché, but content truly is king. Not only do I aid in providing services that allow them to maintain, I cultivate an experience that makes them comfortable and confident in what we create together.
My favorite part is being able to figure out how to tell stories with and without words, while making my clients look and feel like their favorite version of themselves. I want potential clients to know that it is an amazing thing when you show up for yourself; the hardest part is getting started. My goal is to take the stress and guesswork out of the parts that seem difficult, especially if creativity is involved.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I mentioned that during the pandemic I quit my full-time corporate job and opened a studio. I also closed the a studio at the end of the same year. Funny enough, it took me 5 YEARS to commit to the risk of walking away from full-time income that was consistent and secure (yet unfulfilling), and when I finally took the leap to pursue my dreams, closing the studio felt like a slap in the face and it hurt. However, the one thing that I knew that I couldn’t do was give up. I had to continue, especially because I knew that working for myself was the only way to pursue what I was passionate about.
I took time after closing to forage connections within my community and beyond to sustain my business, and haven’t looked back. Two years later, Taylored Design Co. is thriving, and I am so thankful for the support of my family, friends, and clients.
I proved to myself that I really could do this thing and put myself out there; when you put in the work, everything comes full-circle.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me is honestly my current clients. Word of mouth spreads quicker than social media for me, and I thought it would be the other way around! Since what I do is service-based, making sure that I create experiences worth talking about is vital for referrals.
