We were lucky to catch up with Monique Wheeler recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Monique, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I was down and out from regular life shit. A friend of mine, Nina, was going to a bar to try some new standup material and since I could use a laugh, I decided to tag along. I loved it! I thought she was funny as fuck and wanted her to keep going. I asked her why she didn’t do more shows and she explained to me none of the comedy clubs would book her. So my optimistic ass was like, ok bet. I’ll have my own show and i’ll book her, to which Nina replied with something like, “You can’t just start a comedy show, Monique…” To be fair I was reaching by trying to do something I knew NOTHING about, but by the next week I dropped a flier to my new standup show, and Nina was headlining it. My peers showed so much support for the show, the room was packed, so much so I decided to keep it going. I’ve been very blessed with support from day 1.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Mo the founder of Hell Yea Comedy Show. Hell Yea is a millennial comedy experience that has been running successfully for over 3 years now with a plethora of high profile guests and performers.
I want people to know:
1. Entrepreneurship is NOT easy. Chasing a dream and betting on yourself is very uncomfortable & you will have moments when you face discouragement & feel like you want to give up, but don’t. Stay resilient even when shit seems unrealistic.
2. Identify the people you have around you that genuinely want to help see YOUR vision come to life & figure out how to utilize them so it’s a win- win for everyone. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK PEOPLE IN YOUR NETWORK FOR HELP!
3. I just tweeted this, but remain teachable. You will fumble the bag thinking you know everything.
4. Trust God
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Changing poison into medicine. I’ve always admired Tina Turner, but I just finished her book Happiness Becomes You: A Guide to Changing Your Life for Good, and it was a true gem. Often times we get so hung up on our turbulent situations that we only focus on the negative, and miss the beauty in the pain. Once you realize as bad as it is, it can easily become the same level of good, your problems become badges of honor in a sense.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The really beautiful thing about Hell Yea is majority of the support has came from word of mouth and resharing of our content. The community has helped a lot, super grateful.
