We were lucky to catch up with Becky Klinger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Becky , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I was very hesitant to make this a “real” thing. Business or not, at the very beginning idea of making this something more than just “I’ll do the flowers for the baby shower” or “I’d love to help with a centerpiece for the Christmas party!”, I was solely having fun literally playing with flowers. After each party, shower, or dinner party where I did the arrangements, my friends (and even complete strangers) would comment on the blooms. I was so happy and proud of myself that I could create something beautiful that so many people seemed to enjoy. Then, the idea of Becky’s Blooms was born and about 6 months later I made it official.
The actual “launch” was somewhat rushed and unexpected as an incredible opportunity landed in my lap and I couldn’t say no. This literally kept me up until 3 am for 5 nights straight with ALL of the emotions. Stress, anxiety, adrenaline, excitement, butterflies, and exhaustion 🤪 I knew when I accepted that first gig I had to make Becky’s Blooms officially official. It was the push I needed to hit “let’s do this” if you will.
So glad I did! These last few months have been so fun, so casual, and exactly what I wanted from my business. My goal in creating custom floral arrangements is really simple. 1) make it affordable. 2) make it fun and eliminate the stress for the customer. 3) bring joy to everyone who purchases something.
It’s really just about making people happy for me. I find peace in playing with blooms and creating something different each time. I hope you can find peace and joy too! A little sunshine helps everyone smile a bit more.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
First of all, hi! Thank you for even reading this and I hope you reach out for info if you’re interested in creating some beautiful arrangements. I touched on the “how” I got into the business a tad but basically I was motivated by my best friends and even strangers to do the damn thing. Every time I’d do flowers (and some of them were very simple) I’d get compliments. People started saying “oh my gosh I want this! Can I buy it? You should sell these!!!” Sooo that’s where the light went off. Becky’s Blooms was born in September 2022 and it’s been an adventure ever since!
We offer a variety of services…. Mostly floral arrangements for purchase. I’ve had orders for personal spaces and multiple orders as gifts for someone else. We offer different size and price options and we’re always open to communicate through the process.
Another product I’m really proud of is creating and selling custom FAUX floral arrangements. I’ve found a lot of people don’t want to invest in an arrangement that maybe lasts a week-10 days so I had this idea to style fake flowers. I personally have two in my home and I love them. You invest upfront but they quite literally last a lifetime. You can move them room to room, change the blooms out seasonally or just go with a “classic, year round” style to begin with. I do think this is part of the business that sets me apart from other florists. I also have been offering “classes” where a group of 5-15 people get together and I teach them the basics of selecting blooms, prepping and cleaning the stems, and of course styling them. After I did my first class I genuinely cried happy tears. THIS is why I wanted to start this business. Grab a group of your besties, drink some champs and have some nibbles and do something different. Just casual, good fun with people you love. Oh! And you get to take something beautiful home with you ☺️.
I’d love my followers to understand that flower arrangements don’t need to be overwhelming. I’m what I would consider a basic arranger. I don’t create these elaborate, gigantic pieces although I would love to learn that craft.
I also think im very easy to work with and honest. I’ve had 3 clients in the last two months say it was a breath of fresh air to chat with someone so casually about something they were stressed out about.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Honestly, word of mouth. Almost all of my orders have been a friend of a friend or some sort of connection through my children’s school (moms reaching out). The 2nd class I ever taught led me to 3 more classes because they shared their experience with a friend, sister in law and coworker. Reputation as a business owner is huge and I strive to make each client happy with the hopes they’ll rave about me to a friend or suggest me over a dinner party convo.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
urrently. Every day. I’m a wife and a mother to two young boys (3.5 and 1.5) so my main goal in starting this business was to still maintain my flexibility as a stay at home mom. I want to be there for my kids while also having a purpose outside of “mom”. If you are in the thick of it with littles and you have an idea or want to take a leap of faith, all I can say is DO IT! My joy, my sense of well-being, my purpose is back stronger than ever. I’m more than “just a mom” and I am doing this for me (and hopefully you)!
