Hi Dr. Wendy, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I started my entrepreneurial journey almost four decades ago. In 2014, when the Affordable Care Act mandated that individuals have health insurance, I expanded my business to include insurance and financial services. I did not want to be a hypocrite and believed if I was going to sell my clients these products and services, I needed to have them for myself and my family. So, I purchased the various insurance and financial service products I was selling to clients. This choice was from a business & marketing perspective, not for personal financial planning. In 2017, I was notified that the results of my semi-annual mammogram required that I have a biopsy to test a growth that showed up on the image. A couple of days later I underwent a biopsy. The radiologist told me the results would be back in about 3 days. I called the radiology department 3 days later only to be told that I would have to get the results from my doctor. When I called my doctor’s office to get the results, I was told that I would have to schedule an appointment. I told her to schedule an appointment. The receptionist put me on hold for about 3 minutes. The office manager got on the line and told me that the doctor does not make appointments to discuss test results. I asked her how I could get my results. She said that I could come by and pick them up. I immediately drove to the doctor’s office. When I arrived, I was handed a sealed envelope with the results of my test. I sat in my car, opened the envelope, and read the results. I saw the word “carcinoma” and knew I had breast cancer.
God turns lemons into lemonade. I did not cry or panic. A sense of peace came over me. I had no clue where to go from there, so I called a friend who was a breast cancer conqueror. She gave me her oncologist’s phone number. I called the number, explained the situation, and was told to fax my biopsy results to their office. Within 5 minutes of faxing the results, I received a callback. The person on the phone asked for my information, which I happily provided. She told me that they did not accept my insurance but said she would call me right back. About 5 minutes later, she called back and gave me the number to The Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University. She told me to call them right away because they were waiting for my call. Sure enough, they took my information and scheduled an appointment for me to see an oncologist 3 days later.
In the meantime, I did all kinds of research about breast cancer. I did not know anything about the disease other than what I had seen on TV commercials for various breast cancer drugs. Nobody in my family had breast cancer. I visited my friend who was a breast cancer conqueror and asked her to tell me about her experience. Not only did she share her experience with me, she also showed me the scars from her botched reconstructive surgeries. I did even more research about the facility, types of chemotherapy, types of cancer, and the surgical options available. I wanted to be prepared for my appointment with the oncologist so I could ask questions and make informed decisions about my course of treatment for the disease.
My oncologist explained that I have a very aggressive type of cancer. She explained all my treatment options. I chose the most aggressive form of treatment to conquer the disease. This meant chemotherapy every three weeks for a year as well as five surgeries, multiple CAT scans, MRIs, mammograms, labs, and oral medications. The treatments totaled almost $1.5 million in medical bills.
Thank God I practiced what I preached. My health insurance paid all my medical bills. Additionally, all the supplemental provided me with multiple 6-figure tax-free financial shots in the arm that allowed me to focus on my recovery without having to worry about money.
Once I completed my course of treatment and was in remission, I thanked The Lord. I said I am happy, healthy, wealthy, and in my comfort zone. I was good. He told me that He brought me through this journey better than I went in. I was charged to go on a crusade to empower others to not let an illness or injury ruin them financially. Hence, The Financial Cures LLS was formed and The Financial Cures System (TFCS) was developed.
TFCS includes The Financial Cures Book Series: Diagnose Your Financial Health; Optimize Your Financial Health, and book 3 Protect Your Financial Health (to be published in December 2022).

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The things that helped me build my reputation within my market are integrity, doing the right thing, being a person of my word, solving my clients’ problems, and meeting their needs.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki significantly impacted my entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy. I read the book after being an entrepreneur for over two decades. It was a true eye-opener and took my thinking to new heights. I start my presentations with his quote, “It’s not about how much money you make but how much money you keep, how hard it works for you, and how many generations you keep it for.”
