We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful George Parent. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with George below.
Hi George , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The idea of powder coating has always appealed to me. It’s a very interesting process and produces some of the best results in the finishing industry. For me and a lot of others in the industry for a while it was just a small hobby, just kind of a pass time. However, it was something I thoroughly enjoyed doing and had a great passion for. Eventually, people started noticing the things I was doing and started asking me to do parts for them as well,. Whether that be wall art, or even small car parts. At this point I realized maybe I could make some money doing this and started researching who was doing this in my area and to my surprise there was very few. I officially started my business in April, 2022 and it has been on a dramatic rise ever since. I would have never imagined this little hobby becoming what it has in the time I’ve been in business.
George , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up in a small town in upstate New York and when I was in my mid teens events lead my mom to move us to South Carolina. Right out of high school I had no plan and decided to join the United States Marine Corps in 2013. When I got out of the Marine Corps in 2017 I once again found myself in a position with no plan for my future. I started working at a Glass manufacturing company in South Carolina and I just knew after a few years that it wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my work life. At that point is when I started taking a small hobby and wanting to make it into a business. At Dynamic Powder Coating I have a slogan of “The Dynamic Difference.” What that means to me and my customers is you can always expect nothing less than perfection in a quality finished product and you can always expect nothing less than the best customer service I can possibly provide. I treat every potential customer with the upmost respect and as if they were my family. We strive to take a vision and make it a reality and give customers the ability to truly make it theirs. We primarily do custom powder coating jobs mainly on automotive, motorcycle, and ATV/UTV parts, however, we are always open to different types of work, if it’s metal we can coat it!
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Honestly, I started from the bottom. I started doing small parts of my own and eventually small parts for customers with a very cheap, bottom of the barrel set up. I had a cheap powder coating system, a small air compressor, the cheapest sandblaster I could find and a normal household oven I found used online. As I started to gain traction I started to realize very quickly that I was going to need bigger equipment if I wanted to keep doing this on a business level. I did enough small jobs and took money from my personal bank account to start funding slightly bigger and better equipment to take on larger jobs. Once I made the first initial upgrades I realized again very quickly I was going to need to go bigger once again. So that’s what I did, I started saving every bit I could from work I was doing so I could upgrade equipment to take on larger more complex jobs. This becomes a cycle as you can see and to this day, I still keep finding myself wanting to upgrade equipment to go bigger and I will.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
This can be a very short and sweet answer. Word of mouth is the best advertisement along with social media. I have gained most of my business through word of mouth. Producing great quality work and offering great customer service goes a long way. I have always had the mentality that jobs need to leave looking perfect, even if I have to redo it several times, I will always hold myself and business to a high standard and then has definitely helped build my reputation in my area. People talk and good news spreads fast. But always remember, bad news spreads fast as well, consistently good work and service is key, a few bad jobs and everything you work for in a reputation could end up with a stain on it.
