Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jônelle Music. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jônelle, thanks for joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I was a christian my whole entire life. I never really thought that I would be able to do music even though i always have. I grew up playing the trumpet in elementary school and with that I had to learn music theory. I sang in the school and church choirs, I led services in worship, took part in musicals and a bunch of other things. In 2019 my life began to pretty much fall apart. News of covid started to spread and things were slowly starting to shut down, which for me, I thought this was great because it meant I had an abundance of time on my hands. I decided to pursue my passion of music. I would spend my days in quarantine learning and doing research trying to figure out how to get started. My experience with music theory helped me to be able to convert that knowledge into music production. I would research on youtube things like “how to produce a song”. I would take notes, try something, hear it, see if it sounds good. I would take what I learned and started producing beats and writing freestyles and posting them on social media and people loved them. I knew I was on the right track. I kept putting myself out there as scary as it was until people started reaching out to me. I was grateful because Ive always wanted to live this life I just didn’t think I would be. Now, I’ve performed around Vancouver, Victoria and other islands. Ive performed in toronto and in my home city of brampton. Ive performed in the capital city of Ottawa. Ive been on festival stages, big stages and small stages. Ive sang back up, Ive toured with a band. All of this greatness in just 3 years. Every experience in my life has brought me to this moment. Everything has led me here. From music theory to learning skills like harmonizing and ear training in choir. I could always sing but now I’m a singer by profession and I couldn’t be more proud. My life was falling apart in 2019 only to build something better. My dream life is my real life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Jônelle and I am originally from Brampton, Ontario. I have always been into music. I started learning music theory and how to play the trumpet in the 5th grade. I’ve sung in school and church choirs. Participated in musicals, never in a lead role however but you name it, I have done it. At first, I didn’t even think I would be doing music, I mean I did love to sing but being a Christian I couldn’t see myself singing gospel and so I never thought of pursuing a musical career. In 2019, I decided to step away from the church, and that was when I decided to fully utilize my musical skills. I started watching youtube videos on ” how to produce a song”, and I started watching videos of great performers and doing everything I could to make my vision of being a reggae singer to life. Now, I have released 10 singles. I have performed at venues in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, and Victoria Island. I hope to continue to inspire people with my unique sound and encouraging words. My music is uplifting and full of love. It is the perfect fusion of reggae, afrobeat, hip-hop, and RnB.
How did you build your audience on social media?
at the start of my journey, I was doing a lot of writing (and still do) however all of this writing helped me to create content on my socials. So I would write something and then record a video of myself either singing or rapping to a beat and this is how I started gaining attention from various types of people. I have been able to interact with producers worldwide, Promoters, and other artists. Doing this has also granted me opportunities to perform. In one video in particular, I was freestyle at a hip-hop cypher, I didn’t even get the footage but luckily everything was caught on camera. Someone had posted and tagged me in the post and from that one video, I have gained multiple opportunities to perform. I have been able to monetize my content and use it as a tool to continue to make money.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I moved to Vancouver I literally did it on a whim. I didn’t have a job, no money, I literally just made it up in my mind that I was going to do this. My initial reason for moving was to continue my career in athletics by trying out for the Olympics. That didn’t happen, and that was definitely a tough pill for me to swallow at first, I just wasn’t the same athlete I once was. I had to come to terms with that. Along with not performing my best, and having anxiety, I was also dealing with being evicted, not being able to feed myself, literally surviving off spoonfuls of peanut butter, and the idea that “hey at least it has protein”, lol. Maybe not so nutritious but at least my muscles would still recover from yesterday’s torturous workout. . I just had too many things on my mind, and trying to be competitive just become a chore after a while if I’m being honest with myself. It took me a little bit but I finally decided to let go of my Olympic track dreams and put some thought into maybe trying something else. I worked a lot of jobs I hated but I am glad that I stuck to chasing my dreams. Now Im a reggae singer, not a job or a chore at all but more of a dream come true
