Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex Reymundo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alex , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
My hunger to be the person that makes choices for me has always driven me. Don’t mistake my statement, I’ve worked my ass off for others in my youth, I now work 10 times harder but none of it feels like work because it’s what I choose and on my terms. Coming from a hospitality background, I love putting people and pieces together towards one common goal … a good time.
The key to sustaining this for 30+ years has been to keep a relentless pace & a positive attitude plus an amazing support group … Work hard to play hard.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Chance turned to fate had me stumble into making a living as a touring comedian for 30+ years. I have been fortunate, being surrounded by quality and talented people that played a part in me co-producing four of the nine comedy specials in which you can see my work. I founded & am the President of Number JUAN Tequila, it’s unbelievable to me that after finding the best job in the world (comedy) I would seek something so time consuming as running Number JUAN. It’s funny how one career feeds the other and my personal party rages on. I have been happily married for 27 years and fathered two moral, talented, and almost self sustaining kids. While I’m technically a producer of good times, I am most proud of setting an example to my children to pursue their dreams of expressing themselves creatively. Music by both daughter; Mariah Reymundo and son; Alex (goes by reymundo) can be found on most streaming platforms, IT’s THEIR TURN !
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of my art form is the impact I can have on a person’s “moment in life”. Of course I love hearing the laughter and provoking thoughts to the people I engage, clearly that part feeds my vanity and I feel accepted (which is what we all seek) but the truth is my favorite part are the genuine moments I share with people after the show. When someone shares with me how I helped them forget everything, release the laugh, look at something differently, or just love the energy I give … all the the travel, all the time spent alone, all the missed family events suddenly has an mutually amazing payoff. I genuinely like & care about people. These strangers who come to see & hear me, I consider part of my Family, I love sharing a REAL moment and a drink of award winning Number JUAN Tequila with them.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Crazy as it seems, the goal or mission that keeps me going is to justify the sacrifice my parent’s made when they migrated to the USA. Both my Mother & Father were artists that never got to fulfill the chase of their dreams. They created a far from normal, often chaotic, stressful, loving and yet supportive environment for all my siblings. I have to believe there were times that both my parents would have preferred to RUN form all their responsibilities and never look back. They didn’t do that, they stuck it out. They came to the US “LEGALLY” with 6 kids in tow, $4 in their pocket and a language barrier. They worked in hospitality as housekeepers and all aspects of the food & beverage department. Both of my parents rose to the top of their fields and were well respected in some of the finest hotels across the country. So for all these sacrifices made by them I take pride & give thanks when I see the world, every time I enjoy a beach, mountainside, eat an amazing meal, or do something that most people don’t get to experience; flying with the Blue Angles, or performing on some of the most prestigious stages in the country. When I experience these things, I imagine both parents by my side, the foundation of my blessings come from their sacrifices … Thanks Mami y Papi … (Mom & Dad).
