Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Daisha Truitt. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Daisha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
There was a quote I read once. To paraphrase it, basically the only thing that separates successful people from non-successful is that successful people are wiling to do what it takes to get the job done. That stuck with me because it’s so true. There have been many times where the work placed before me seemed too overwhelming and the thought of just forgetting about it and moving on would always creep up.
One of the most important traits to develop is discipline. Without it, we are left to our emotions that can cloud our rational thinking sometimes. If every time I had to make a business decision and I was in too much of an emotional state, I would have to wait to make the right decision under disciplined circumstances. In this industry, it’s very easy to become lackadaisical, from dealing with clients you love, to you being “the boss”, who draws the line at that point? Who’s telling you this bill needs to be paid or don’t forget to do this. Discipline is my boss and I use that trait to my advantage. The moments I start to ease too into things or become almost jaded, I have to uncover that to allow me to make the best decisions for my business.
I also thinks it takes courage to be successful. Courage that you may “fail”. Courage to go 100% in and try it out. It won’t happen ever if your’e too scared to even make that leap. And a leap it is. Without courage, I wouldn’t be close to where I am today.
So many times we are shot down or ridiculed for our passions and dreams, because the other person doesn’t see the vision you have. That can be greatly discouraging, so much so that people decide to quit and not pursue it anymore. You must have courage to continue forward. I truly believe that is how we continue to grow and open ourselves to the opportunities God and the world has laid out for us.

Daisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those of you who may not know me, thank you for taking the time to read about my story. My name is Daisha Truitt. I remember the first time I told my mom I was going to be a cosmetologist. I was 13, sitting in the living room in our Cincinnati home. I said, “I know what I’m doing right after high school, and that’s going to cosmetology school!” And from that point on, I just knew it.
I’ve always had a passion for all things beauty. From fashion, to lipsticks and makeup, and all things hair. I loved playing with my Bratz dolls and doing different things to their hair. First time I found out doll hair is synthetic, I had the house smelling like burnt plastic!
Anyways, in high school, I did my first big chop. As nervous as I was, I decided to learn how to nurture and grow my hair in its natural state. After a few years on Pinterest, I decided to create a YouTube channel of all the info I had been reading about. There, I would post tutorials, product reviews, and other things related to natural haircare.
Doing sew ins or braids wasn’t my style. I actually never knew how to cornrow until 3 years ago. I never liked the sleek and perfect look. My style is more messy but presentable. I like the different hair types and the natural frizz that came with it. I fell in love with my hair and just wanted everyone around me to experience that.
So it should come to no shock how surprised I was to find that there wasn’t much to learn about natural black hair types in cosmetology school. I knew I needed the license though, and didn’t let that discourage me. I studied, practiced and finally obtained my license in 2020, right before the pandemic.
One of the biggest ways I feel my brand stands out amongst others is the dedication towards natural haircare. As a brand, I want to invoke care, knowledge and advice for clients all over so they can feel just as confident in their natural hair as I do. I have devoted hours and hours of time into classes, courses, videos, and hands on experience for the past 10 years, because this is my passion. These years of knowledge helps me provide clients with up to date data, information and instructions to properly care for their hair. We can finally take the guessing game out and let my brand help you.
My favorite package to service is the Kinks and Kurls Package. It includes a detox to remove all impurities, hard mineral deposits and dirt from the hair, starting it off on a clean slate. I follow up with an Olaplaex treatment, which helps repair and add bonds in the hair, leaving softer, more hydrated, healthier hair. Next is the steam hydration treatment, intended to help sanitize your strands and open up the cuticle for a deeper cleanse and conditioner penetration. I then go snd style your curls or coils one by one, showing you this process so it can be repeated at home. The top tier part is after the hair is set under the dryer. I cut and shape the defined curls set in it’s natural state, which makes the curls pop even more!
10 years ago, where I’m at now would seem like a dream. I’m grateful everyday to live in my dreams.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
One of the most effective strategies I’ve used in the past and still to this day are client referrals. It makes a world a difference when you have a real live being telling another person they recommend you. Asking my clients if they know a friend, family member or even posting on social media helps the word spread out. Even in this very media induced world, word of mouth is still my top way of building. Practicing great customer service as well as hair services will help you get more referrals, guaranteed.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes, I have been reading No-Compromise Leadership by Neil Ducoff. The author is the founder of the business coaching company I’m apart of, Strategies. They’ve been helping salons reach their business goals since the 90’s. The biggest takeaway from it that changed my approach to entrepreneurial thinking is having no compromise in your business. If you make it a priority, you must follow through. There’s no other way around it than to do it and do it with urgency kind of mentality. It has helped me put my business priorities first and stay organized with my tasks. It has also trickled down into personal aspects of my life, which I’ve seen a great shift. I recommend it and adopting a no compromise mentality when it comes to operating your business.
