We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jenn Jouhseik. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jenn below.
Hi Jenn, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
I’d love to say without hesitation that I wish I started my business sooner… but I’m a strong believer that everything happens for a reason.
Prior to launching into entrepreneurship, I was building my career as an HR Professional in the corporate world. With six years in and a SHRM-CP certification under my belt, I was following the trajectory to one day become Chief or Director… but *something* was missing.
At the end of 2020, I underwent a severe period of burnout that took a toll on my mental and physical health. As a result, I ended up taking a personal leave where I stumbled upon a FB ad for a copywriting course, plunged knee deep into it, and fell in love.
In January 2021, I made the scary af decision to quit my job and launch my business that Feb. I had no idea what I was doing and nothing lined up, but I knew that this was exactly what I was meant to do.
I’m extremely proud of myself and where I am today. I think that if I were to have started sooner than I did, I wouldn’t have had the sink or swim mentality that made me as successful as I was in such a quick timeframe. I worked my ass off and was able to exceed my corporate salary by month 6… which was absolutely mind-blowing! I went on to make 6-figures by month 9 and the rest is history.
Jenn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After spending 6+ years as a SHRM-CP HR Professional and 5+ years of emulating brand voice in an impactful way for brands like Uniqlo, Dunkin’, Burts Bees, and Oral B, I took my breadth of experience and launched my copywriting studio, JOUHCO™. Since then, I’ve trained under several industry leaders: Rob & Kira’s The Copywriter Club Think Tank, Joanna Wiebe’s Copy School—earning certifications in Emails, Funnels, Landing Pages, Website Copy, and Sales Pages, Justin Blackman’s Codex Academy—earning a certification in Brand Voice, and Troy Ericson’s ELM Certification Program—earning a certification in Email List Management.
With my high-conversion storytelling approach, I holistically identify your secret sauce, nail your messaging, and craft compelling copy that deeply resonates with your dream clients and inspires them to take action. I thrive working with multi-passionate and ambitious CEOs, semi-bold personal brands, and business owners who are all about making a positive impact. As a personality-driven copywriter and brand storyteller, my superpower lies in giving you the confidence to show up authentically as yourself, have your story be heard, and help you create an irresistibly memorable brand.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I’ve been very thankful to get most of my clientele from two sources: referrals and organically. The common thread between this has been putting myself out there.
Earlier this year, I attended The Copywriter Club IRL conference and Mike Kim gave a speech about the importance of personal branding. He said, “You could be the best copywriter in the world, but if no one knows who you are… it doesn’t matter.” This sentiment applies to anyone. If you don’t put yourself out there, no one will really *know* who you are and what you’re capable of.
For me, this looks like showing up on social media and having fun with reels. It’s attending live events or connecting with other copywriters, industry leaders, or even my ideal clients. It’s joining free and paid communities that have a variety of perspectives and insights. It’s being myself and letting my personality/energy draw the right people in (and repel the wrong people who are not a fit).
You have to find the best strategies for you and this can look differently for everyone.
Any advice for managing a team?
My background in HR Management has taught me that it’s extremely important to have a *true* channel of open communication. One that allows different perspectives and ideas to be heard, despite a difference in opinions. And to constantly reinforce this because oftentimes companies say open door, but it doesn’t always end up that way.
A great way to ensure that your team members feel supported, confident, and happy is to have regular check-ins (both as a group and individually) and ask them. Don’t just assume or guess how things are—hear it directly from the source! But don’t just listen to what they bring to the table, take action and implement. I’ve learned that I would *much* rather be challenged on something or told the truth than have my team swallow their feelings, hate me and what they do, and eventually leave because they’re unhappy.
My favorite questions to ask are:
“How are you feeling about everything?”
“Is there anything you don’t like doing or wish were done differently?”
“Do you feel like we could be doing anything better?”
