Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jonathan Marchant. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jonathan, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I always knew I wanted to pursue music professionally, but there were a lot of things holding me back: Other people were telling me it wasn’t worth it, seeing how some famous musicians were treated and how the fame got to their head, could I even make it in the industry? Did I even want to be apart of the industry? Besides just singing in my own room as a teen, I really didn’t do any sort of professional music. It wasn’t until I started recording covers in a local studio that sent me in the right direction. I performed some cover songs from my favorite artist and then I would share on social media. At that time I didn’t really understand what it meant to be a professional musician/artist. I actually reached out to a local voice teacher turned producer and asked her advice on what my next steps should be. We decided together to work on my voice for a while. And then after that, she asked me if I wanted to do my own song! I was blown away! I couldn’t believe it was possible. And now I have 8 songs out on Spotify, Apple Music, etc? I knew at the moment this producer asked me if I wanted to do my own music that I had to do it. I wanted to. Even if it was a side gig. I wanted to pursue it so badly. And it’s been one of the greatest decisions of my life. I have learned so many things. And I continue to learn and grow and I love it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am from Provo, Utah. I’ve been living in Provo my whole life. I’m 25 years old. Love music and singing and recording and learning to produce (still a newbie at that haha). I actually reached out to a voice teacher turned producer and we started just working on my voice to strengthen it and then we started writing my own music. So I currently have 9 songs out on all the major music platforms and am continuing to work on more. I believe I have this unique empathy for others. I try to showcase that in my music. I always hope that people can relate to what my lyrics say and can feel that they have worth. That is really important to me. I really want people to understand their worth as human beings. We live in such a materialistic society where we have to look at act a certain way to connect with others. I want to fight against all that. I am 100% about authenticity and empathy. The only way to shine is to be just who you are.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
my whole life is driving my creative journey. Growing up in a strict and rigid religious background and then living in such a fake world, I began shaming myself for my sexuality, desires, dreams, and more all to conform to societies “norms.” But what I’ve realized it that everything is just a social construct and we are the designers of our lives. I’m tired of listening to the world’s vision for myself. I am the designers of my life. I get to choose what I do and no one can stop me. I want others to know they can do anything they want to no matter the repercussions.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding thing is inspiring others. If I only touch one person with words and a melody from just 1 song, then I have accomplished my mission. If I’ve saved just 1 person from hurting themselves, then my life is fulfilled. We live in a world where we our worth is dependent on our actions and not just because we are unique beings.
