We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Roi Bars a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Roi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Our song “Fake Doors”. Leaving aside that is our most streamed song, it caused a big impact on me due to the nature of its composition. I could say that it’s a check point of how I feel with what I’ve learned on my music career so far, my achievements and the reasons I’m still here. The main topic of this song is about making decisions and that even though the road may be tough and confusing, taking risks is inevitable. Before making this song I kept thinking on how I wanted to try new ways to wright music but always hesitated, to stay in the “safe zone”. It was really hard for me to get out of my routine so I went for it and created something that was different from all the music I made before and I fell in love with the outcome, same as our listeners did with Fake Doors.
Roi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I was growing up my dad was a big inspiration for me in the music scene. I’ve always had the support of my parents but, what can I tell you, when you love something you just go for it and here I am. As every other career there will always be ups and downs but the most important thing is to be constant, for more cliché that it sounds. A big amount of people pays more attention to your persistence than how you are actually doing. I grew up in Guadalajara, Jalisco. I formed part of a few bands over there as a drummer and mostly as a singer, but due to life circumstances I was required to move to San Diego, so I got a fresh start. After years of learning experiences in Mexico, I was able to guide myself through this “fresh start” on my music career here in San Diego.
I taught my self how to produce music and started a solo project called “Roi Bars”.
I experimented with different sounds but definitely was intrigued by the indie-electronic side. Performing that as a one man band was a challenge but it was in my plans to have a band. Luckily, not too far from the starting point, my bandmates joined and now we are a four piece band (Roi Bars Band).
The first to join was Geo as a drummer. During pandemic Jeremiah came along as a guitarist, and lastly, Bill formed part of the band as a bassist. With the support of them we took the band to the next level. Our sound evolved to an explosive electro-rock that brings elements of pop, hip-hop, edm, and rock n roll to our live show.
I can proudly say that we’ve been in national TV and performed on some of the most prestigious venues in San Diego, to over 300+ people. More big things are coming!!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes… TIKTOK.
I have learned more music tips (production, industry, live scene, etc.) in 1 year than I ever did on youtube or classes (nothing beats living the actual experience tho). My tiktok algorithm got so trained to what I needed that I started to get feed of ONLY the thing that I needed… and super short videos, they cut to the chase. There are very important people in the industry with accounts giving face to face tips to everybody.
Also, this platform breaks the filter between the industry and the independent artists. You have the opportunity to reach millions of people with your own creativity and in the comfort of your house.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Giving to the people a tool to set their mood of the day. I want to be their life soundtrack because as empathetic person, giving others the feeling of empowerment makes me feel happy and fulfilled.
