We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Harris Holland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Harris, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on is my upcoming album, Love and Transactions. This project has been in the works for over two years. I have been collecting records and creating the concept for a while and finally have a chance to put it all into motion. Love and Transactions is the third full length project I have worked on and my second producer album. This project is based around my life the past few years and my journey. The first few songs follow the theme of love. Love for music, hustling, and people. The second half of the project is based on transactions, get money music.

Harris, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a producer and engineer from Charlottesville, Virginia. I grew up in Tucson, Arizona and always loved music, but didn’t get into music production until high school. I mainly make beats and record, but dabble in music marketing/rollouts and artist development. I like to think I differ from others in my hands on approach to making music and working with artists. I love to mix and master the songs recorded on my beats and develop personal relationships with the people I work with. I started my production company 808SpinZ in high school and have been growing it since.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, one of the most rewarding things as a producer is finishing music and releasing it. I love the journey of creating songs and seeing them go from one shots to radio ready cuts, but nothing can top the feeling of finishing these records and putting them out. The best feeling is seeing a record you spent countless hours on played at a show and the audience eating it up.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to learn the hard way was that record labels, managers, and execs don’t typically have your best interests in mind. As most young artists do, I assumed that signing to a label or manager was the end all be all. This couldn’t be further from the truth. There is the occasional music lover who has established themself and wants to share what they have learned, but at the end of the day music is a business. Businesses are designed to exploit assets for capitol. The message I preach to young creatives is to read your contracts, hire an attorney, and put your mental/physical health first!
